Object: Request for people to write or call their congressmen
A young woman died a couple weeks ago, she died of
alcohol poisoning at a frat party. You might have
seen a report about it in the news. She died because
she was drinking too much, passed out, and died.
You might be thinking, "oh just another dumb kid died".
Nope.
She wasn't the typical person, apparently she was a
homecoming queen, intelligent, nice, popular, and
the town she grew up in is greiving heavily over their
loss.
What I'd like people to consider is, alcohol is a drug,
a legal drug, that is often times abused, and that
can have serious consequences. The young woman that died
had been part of the D.A.R.E program, so you'd expect
that if anyone would know how alcohol could kill someone,
she would be one of the ones to know it. The point to
consider is... there are no warnings on the bottles about
HOW MUCH is dangerous, or when you can know it's dangerous.
I checked the lable of a typical California bottle of wine,
the lable says that it's bad for pregnant women to drink
and that there can be health issues... which in no way conveys
what is normal to drink, nor what could cause someone's death.
If you buy a typical drug at a pharmacist, a legal drug,
they list what is normal, to some level they tell you what
is normal to consume, but they don't on bottles of alcohol.
Why?
Did you know that if you drink to the level of passing
out (which is actually fairly common, this young woman
for instance), you are dangerously close to DYING???
Passing out drunk... can be deadly.
I didn't know that... I only found this out in doing some
quick research on the internet... yet I've been through
high school drug classes in the past that talked about such
stuff. Could it be that the young woman that died 2 weeks
ago, that she didn't know this either?
Probably.
Please, consider writing to your congressmen to ask them
to force alcohol producers to list some nominal max level
that is thought to be safe, put it on the label. My own
choice for text for such a label would say something like:
"Warning: the typical adult male should drink no more than
'X' bottles of this product in 1 hour ('Y' bottles if you
are the normal adult female), or you could die from
alcohol poisoning. If you have drunk enough to pass out,
you are dangerously close to death and should be taken
to a hospital immediately".
Something of that context, that tells people what a maximum
level of drinking is, that warns them what to watch out for.
A text like that on the bottles could have saved that young
womans life. Please write or call your congressman today.
Thanks.

Had she been smoking weed, she would be fine. Legalize it. Now.

Are you sure about that?

What if you smoke enough to cause your heart to stop, wouldn't
that kill you too?

Nope, you can't smoke or eat enough marijuana to kill you.
It's just not possible, you'd fall asleep for a few days maybe...but
not die.

As Towelie said.......Legalise it. Now !

You wanna get high?

There has never been, in recorded history, a case of anyone dying from
a marijuhana overdose.
Never.

All I'm asking for, is people to be realistic about it,
put information about how someone if they exceed some
level... they can die from it. That one of the indicators
is that if you're passing out... you're dangerously close
to death. That isn't on the bottles, and it should be,
else you'll keep seeing people dying from drinking too
much and thinking they can pass out and it's all fine
and dandy... it isn't.
God made it all, Jesus died for our sins.

Quite plainly not for the sins of the bottle label regulators.

I just checked my kitchen knives and even my firearms, and they don't
have anything printed on them telling me not to stab people or shoot
fuffy animals.
I don't have any morals, what, with being an atheist and all, and
I don't have a congressman, (I can't afford to buy one), so there's
nothing I can do to restrain myself from trying to stab or shoot

And I just noticed that someone has crossed out the warning on my

If so, then you've made a case for legalization.
But even so, that does not help people like Sam who die
from their lack of knowledge.
I can't fathom her dying over it... that is so foriegn,
so odd, that some simple text is missing on the label,
at least warning her that it was serious.
She from what I read, was not pregnant, and being 18 or 20
or whatever... she's in the prime of health... so she's
going to completely ignore some LAME warning mentioning
those two items and that's all she was warned about...
That is so sad.
One sentence: "Warning: you can DIE if you pass out drinking!"
That one sentence, lame as it is, would have warned her.
Anything... come up with anthing to say HOW MUCH can kill you,
or what to look for that would kill you... just say what it is.
That's all SAY WHAT IT IS that can kill you on the label
so she might not have died... that's all... simple text,
plain old simple text... at least you tried in saying
some simple text warning.

How do you know?

Where is the study showing it?

http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/2093.html
The Drug Awareness Warning Network Annual Report, published by the US
federal government contains a statistical compilation of all drug deaths
which occur in the United States. According to this report, there has never
been a death recorded from the use of marijuana by natural causes. No one
knows the total number of deaths caused by enforcement of marijuana
prohibition laws.
Unlike opiates, barbituates or amphetamines, there seems to be little risk
from the use of large amounts of marijuana. When a person smokes too much
s/he feels very tired and lies down to enjoy a soothing nap or sleep. I call
it "overtoking".

All I'm asking for, is people to be realistic about it,

Yes, it can. Typically, it is your bodies way of

figured that this is all that would happen, but it is
possible to consume so much alcohol so fast, that it
hits all at once and when the body shuts down, it is
already too late. Too much alcohol for the body to
recover from.

Good post. Although the amount would be a little
different for different people, one could base it on an
average, with a warning about those who weigh less than
average and for those who weigh more, not to feel like
Superman. :)

Passing out drunk... can be deadly.

Yes, it can. Typically, it is your bodies way of
shutting down so that it can recover. She may have
figured that this is all that would happen, but it is
possible to consume so much alcohol so fast, that it
hits all at once and when the body shuts down, it is
already too late. Too much alcohol for the body to
recover from.

Yet another imperfection in gawwwd's perfect creation. Or is this perhaps
his way of punishing sinners?

Do you think smokers change their minds about buying a pack of smokes after
reading the label? I know when I was a smoker I ignored it. Binge
drinkers are the same.
