Request for people to write or call their congressmen |
A young woman died a couple weeks ago, she died of
alcohol poisoning at a frat party. You might have
seen a report about it in the news. She died because
she was drinking too much, passed out, and died.
You might be thinking, "oh just another dumb kid died".
Nope.
She wasn't the typical person, apparently she was a
homecoming queen, intelligent, nice, popular, and
the town she grew up in is greiving heavily over their
loss.
What I'd like people to consider is, alcohol is a drug,
a legal drug, that is often times abused, and that
can have serious consequences. The young woman that died
had been part of the D.A.R.E program, so you'd expect
that if anyone would know how alcohol could kill someone,
she would be one of the ones to know it. The point to
consider is... there are no warnings on the bottles about
HOW MUCH is dangerous, or when you can know it's dangerous.
I checked the lable of a typical California bottle of wine,
the lable says that it's bad for pregnant women to drink
and that there can be health issues... which in no way conveys
what is normal to drink, nor what could cause someone's death.
If you buy a typical drug at a pharmacist, a legal drug,
they list what is normal, to some level they tell you what
is normal to consume, but they don't on bottles of alcohol.
Why?
Did you know that if you drink to the level of passing
out (which is actually fairly common, this young woman
for instance), you are dangerously close to DYING???
Passing out drunk... can be deadly.
I didn't know that... I only found this out in doing some
quick research on the internet... yet I've been through
high school drug classes in the past that talked about such
stuff. Could it be that the young woman that died 2 weeks
ago, that she didn't know this either?
Probably.
Please, consider writing to your congressmen to ask them
to force alcohol producers to list some nominal max level
that is thought to be safe, put it on the label. My own
choice for text for such a label would say something like:
"Warning: the typical adult male should drink no more than
'X' bottles of this product in 1 hour ('Y' bottles if you
are the normal adult female), or you could die from
alcohol poisoning. If you have drunk enough to pass out,
you are dangerously close to death and should be taken
to a hospital immediately".
Something of that context, that tells people what a maximum
level of drinking is, that warns them what to watch out for.
A text like that on the bottles could have saved that young
womans life. Please write or call your congressman today.
Thanks.

Noble enough intentions... but the amount X would change for everybody. We
all have different metabolisms and our bodies react differently to alcohol.
Please find one instance when someone smoked marijuana, and it caused their
heart to stop... that must be some gooood *****.
I think I understand where you're coming from. Fact is, alcohol is deadly.
If you drink like a dumb-***** you might die. Not that this is the nature of
the discussion, but marijuana is not able to be overdosed on. There is no
toxic level of marijuana... it has never killed anybody directly. (That I've
been able to read or hear about)

Yep, and a small additional text could even list body weights
and how much is safe... if you go over that level, have someone
handy to call an ambulance.
As it is, there is NO information about what's safe or not.
If I buy a bottle of vodka... can I drink all of it in one hour?
???
There's no discussion on the bottle about what's safe and
I can die if I do that...right? I have no idea, but I would
suspect that I could die if I drank an entire bottle of
vodka.
Please find one instance when someone smoked marijuana, and it caused their

Maybe you should do a study?
I think I understand where you're coming from. Fact is, alcohol is deadly.
Apparently so.
And I think the young woman's death could have been avoided
with just a little additional text, ANYTHING telling her what
is normal, or what to watch out for. If she felt like she
was about to pass out, or close to it... GET HELP NOW! There
is no discussion about that... so she died.
If you drink like a dumb-***** you might die.
That's the entire point... she was NOT dumb. She was
doing normal stuff... stuff you see on TV, people passing
out drunk... she thought it was normal, lots of people do,
and SHE DIED.

the discussion, but marijuana is not able to be overdosed on. There is no

Well, maybe a study is in order... but that won't fix
the immediate issue... people dying from passing out drunk.

Then why do they print recommended amounts on Zinc suppliments?
Zinc has been shown to cause brain damage in large quantities.
Explain to me why Zinc is detailed on the lable, yet alcohol isn't.
I know now that the US congress failed that young woman in not
telling the alcohol producers to define HOW MUCH is OK and HOW MUCH
is deadly... on the lable.
The entire USA... all it's professors, all the universities,
they all failed that young woman.
Every last person... all doctors, we all failed that young woman
in not saying to have the label warn people what is TOO MUCH
and what is a sign of pending doom... their death if they
don't get help IMMEDIATELY... or they'll die... we all let her
down.
But the alcohol producers, they in particular, they're the
most responsible for her dying... they didn't warn her and
they've known about it for years.
All I'm asking, is that we own up to our responsibility and
require that the labels tell people what they obviously need
to know so they don't end up doing what she did... dying...
a few characters on a label... that's all... simple text
she could read while having her drink(s).

Ahhh so you also don't know that taking a whole bottle of zinc is bad for
you? They tell you how many tablets to take, not how many is bad for you,
there is a difference, especially since the amount of zinc in each tablet
can vary per manufacturer..
Did you know that fire burns? Maybe we need to start putting warnings on
matchboxes just in case someone doesn't realise.

how much vodka in one hour would kill me... I've never seen
any listing of that kind of information.
And that's what I'm asking for... is for the producers to put
on the bottles, a lable, for what is normal for a typical person,
male or femail, such that if they drink that amount, that they
won't die... like Sam did. HOW MUCH is that... put it on the
label... that seems important to know... it should be on the
label...
Right?
Is that so much to ask for?
Some puny little bit of information... it seems so little,
so insignificant... yet it could have saved her life. She
might still be alive if that information had been on the label.

You can't tell me how much vodka can kill me... interesting...
Nobody can you dumb *****. It varies with the individual. The issue is
blood alcohol level and the fatal level is different for different people.
Not to mention the amount you have to drink to reach that level, what you
have to drink, how fast you have to drink it... they all vary depending on
all kinds of factors.
The best anybody can do is give an estimate for the amount of alcohol per
hour based on body weight. A single label will *not cover all cases. Nor
could it indicate that "passing out" is not necessarily a warning sign of
alcohol poisoning but only one possible sign. Lots of people pass out but
don't die.
It's just not that simple. But the information *is available and you *can
educate yourself and take precautions. But that requires you actually *do
something instead of sitting around whining about what everybody else
(including "the government") ought to be doing for you...

John, you are an idiot if you can't figure out that drinking an entire
bottle of vodka can be dangerous.
As for your label idea, it's crap. Why? Because humans are
different. I'm 6', 155lbs.. but I'm missing my spleen, so alcohol
really waps me hard.
So, a label would have to include information not only for body mass,
but people with liver disorders, missing spleens, various other
medical disorders, etc.

They don't say... they say "buy this, it's good for you!"
but they don't say:
======================
HOW MUCH IS OK <<<
======================
Well Doug, I didn't say the label had to be for you, I said
for the TYPICAL MALE, and the TYPICAL FEMALE... just those,
no one more... just those.
Give ANY information that gives people ANY kind of feel about
what can kill them. ANYTHING... currently in the USA, there is
NOTHING listed... ANYTHING would be MUCH better than NOTHING.
People can take that "typical" and adjust accordingly to
match themselves in some manner... less body mass, drink less.
More body mass... you can drink more.
She had no information... and she died.
We can fix that... information can help fix it.
No information does NOTHING to fix it.
We can learn an immense amount from Australia, they from
what the one poster said, they've already started labeling
the bottles and already have the ads on TV saying such.
We need to catch up with Australia.

No, that information probably wouldn't have helped her. She was
not 20 years old which means that her tolerance for alcohol would
be less than for a fully grown woman. Also she was a homecoming
queen which makes it a safe guess to say that her weight was less
(probably a lot less) than the weight of a typical female which
also makes her tolerance for alcohol less than for the average
female. Any label saying that a safe limit for a female is
"whatever" would have given her (and others) a false sense of
security and caused more young people to drink more than they should.
