Scientific Facts in the Bible
The Bible Reveals that the Earth is Round
The Scriptures tell us that the earth is round: "It is he that sits upon the
circle of the earth" (Isaiah 40:22). The word translated "circle" here is
the Hebrew word chuwg, which is also translated "circuit" or "compass"
(depending on the context). That is, it indicates something spherical,
rounded, or arched ? not something that is flat or square. The book of
Isaiah was written sometime between 740 and 680 B.C. This is at least 300
years before Aristotle suggested, in his book On the Heavens, that the earth
might be a sphere. It was another 2,000 years later (at a time when science

Columbus to sail around the world.

ago) and said, "If God said there are paths in the sea, I am going to find
them." Maury then took God at His word and went looking for these paths, and
we are indebted to his discovery of the warm and cold continental currents.
His book on oceanography remains a basic text on the subject and is still
used in universities.

At the time of columbus, the educated already recognized that the earth was
spherical, but this was based upon Aristotle and Ptolemy. Not the Bible.

You are reading more into scripture than is actually there. The verse cited
is to vague to draw conclusions.
It is doubtful that Matthew Maury was so ignorant that he did not notice
that ships travelling from North America to Europe followed a more
northernly course than ships that were travelling in the other direction.
Even Christopher Columbus knew of those currents. Benjamen Franklin was the
first to measure them, and that was before Matthew Maury was even born.

You source is deliberately misleading you. The statement by Richard Leakey
came in a televised discussion on human evolution. The issue was not
whether man evolved, but the line of evolution. Leakey was merely making
the point that there was more than one possibility.

I just wanted to comment on your first one, and add one Scripture. Job
26:7,
"He spreads out the northern [skies] over empty space; he suspends the
earth over nothing." (NIV)
So by combining both of them, we have a round (spherical) earth,
floating on nothing (in space). Sounds like the Genesis writer had a
source information no other culture at the time had. And the Bible
states that source was God. (2 Ti 3:16)

The Hebrew word "chuwg" does not mean sphere, and no amount of double talk
can change it into a sphere. An object can easily be both round and flat,
such as a penny.

I just wanted to comment on your first one, and add one
Scripture. Job 26:7,
"He spreads out the northern [skies] over empty space;
he suspends the earth over nothing." (NIV)
Try reading Job 26:7 in context. It helps in understanding.
In verse 5, the dead (shades) tremble. In verse 6, the underworld is
uncovered. In verse 8 there is no rain. In verse 9 the face of the moon
is hidden.
In other words, the author is describing a world of fear. That is why in
verse 7, the earth is suspended over nothing. To the ancients, that is a
dreary thought.
Perhaps you can answer the guestions God gave to Job in chapter 38:
Job 38:4-6
"Where were you
when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you possess understanding!
Who set its measurements - if you know -
or who stretched a measuring line across it?
On what were its bases set,
or who laid its cornerstone -
Here we find that the earth has a foundation, bases, and a cornerstone.
Does that sound scientific to you?

I have always been amaged that Christians buy the argument in 2 Timothy.
If you accept that it was written by Paul (it wasn't,) you are faced with
the fact that the New Testament did not exist when 2 Timothy was written.
So by what twist of logic can you claim that it refers to the New Testament?
Paul would have been familiar with the Septuagint, therefore it is
reasonable to assume that he meant the Septuagint was inspired by God. But
only the Eastern Orthodox churches uses the Septuagint today.

The problem you both have is your misunderstanding of Hebrew and how it is
read in the Ancient Form before Vowel Marks. Old Hebrew is not a precise
language nor was it ever meant to be a precise language. Each word in Old
Hebrew must be read and interputed within the context of the reader and thus
may mean a thousand different things. To read "Science" into the text is a
fools errand and also simply does not do justice to the Divine message
within the passage which speaks to the heart and the soul and not to the
mind.

your bible, you'd see that jesus and the devil had a party on the
highest mountain and were able to see 'four corners of the earth'.
You'd think they'd pick a closer mountain than one in the Himalayas.
Wouldn't you? They certainly could have saved a lot of fuel by not
flying quite so far.
