—Joseph-Albert Guay was a Quebec City jeweller who planted a bomb on a
passenger flight in 1949, killing his wife Rita and 23 other
passengers. At the time, it was the worst mass murder in North
American history. Guay, a strict Roman Catholic, had fallen in love
with a 17-year-old girl but was unable to divorce his wife. Together
with clockmaker Genereux Ruest, Guay created a bomb made of dynamite
and planted it aboard a flight Rita boarded. Nineteen passengers and
four crew members died in the explosion; Guay was arrested two weeks
after the crash and sentenced to hang. He was executed in 1951,
uttering the last words "Au moins, je meurs célebré," or, "At least I
die famous."
