Object: Spend this Christmas in the City Where Christmas Began
IN THE STEPS OF THE MAGI
A Christmas Pilgrimage to Bethlehem
------------------------------------------------
Full Session: December 16th through 30th
Half Session: December 23rd through 30th
------------------------------------------------
Hiking Tour through: Jordan, Israel and Palestine
------------------------------------------------
The art of pilgrimage was a spiritual tradition that once flourished within
the Christian community and in almost every other religious tradition. The
"In the Steps of the Magi" tour is an attempt to rekindle the humility and
grace of this tradition while helping to expose participants to the peoples
and cultures of the Middle East. Pilgrimage is still a highly esteemed
tradition in the Middle East-a tradition for which Christians and Muslims
share a deep respect.
The journey will begin near Jerash in Jordan. We'll end our journey in the
West Bank in the city of Bethlehem. Along the way, we will get the chance
to visit many amazing sites, including the beautiful city of Petra, the
baptismal site of Jesus, Jericho, St. George's Desert Monastery, Jerusalem,
the Dome of the Rock, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Hebron, Nazareth,
Ramallah, Bethlehem and the Church of Nativity.
To complete our journey, we will use a variety of methods, including cars,
camels and a significant amount of walking. By taking the time to walk
through many areas, we will have the opportunity to observe and interact
with the communities and historical sites along the route of our journey
with a level of patience and intensity that no other tour can provide.
Though support vehicles will never be out of reach, we encourage
participants to make full use of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see
the Middle East on foot. For those who would like to join us in Palestine
this Christmas but would like to skip the long hikes, we have prepared a
"half session" tour from December 23rd through December 30th. This portion
of the trip will not include any strenuous walking and will allow
participants from both sessions to join Palestinian Christians in their
traditional Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem, the city of Christ's birth.
Make this Christmas unique. Join us for celebrations in Bethlehem.
The deadline to register is November 16th. You can register online at our
website: www.hlttravel.org. For more info, please contact:
travel@holylandtrust.org
But don't wait until the last minute! All participants who register before
October 30th will receive a complimentary Journey of the Magi video or DVD.
The Journey of the Magi was an event held in the year 2000 to honor Christ's
birth. Men and women from around the world chose to retrace the Journey of
the Magi (or the "three wise men") from the Bible in order to mark this
occasion. To honor local pilgrimages traditions, many of the participants
wore white as they walked and rode camels from Cteisphon in Iraq to the city
of Bethlehem, a journey of over 1,200 miles. The film documents the
struggles and surprises of these international pilgrims as they traveled
through the modern Middle East, exploring a community and a culture with
which most them were unfamiliar. Great for Christmas viewings!
