Physician, heal thyself
Meaning
Attend to one's own faults, in preference to pointing out the faults of
others.
Actually, it means to attend to one's own illness before the illnesses
of others.
From the Bible, Luke 4:23 (King James Version):
And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb,
Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do
also here in thy country.
Which was the question/issue Jesus knew the audience would raise, not
what he was preparing to teach them. Context, context, context.
Agree.
He immediately followed this with "Truly, I say to you, no prophet is
acceptable in his own country." He followed with examples of caring for
the needs of widows and lepers, and how even foreigners did that while
they themselves did not--and they threw him out of the synagogue, as his
opening statement implied they would react.
Actually, HE followed with examples of how the prophets historically
have done the least in their respective hometowns.
This verse is actually in reference to how those who were physically
the closest to Jesus had the most difficult time accepting Who HE is.
This verse obviously refers to the reaction of those who resented and
opposed him. That's why it begins "Doubtless you will quote to me this
proverb". IOW, it's not Jesus' idea but a common proverb known to all.
Thought is not reaction.
Here Jesus showed HE is **both** clairvoyant (knowing the thoughts of
HIS audience) and prophetic (predicting their reaction).
Upon hearing HIS account about how prophets are rejected in their own
hometown, the Nazarenes tried unsuccessfully to kill Jesus, Who simply
walked right through them leaving them (Luke 4:28-30).
He didn't give an account illustrating how prophets are rejected in
their own home town, he gave them examples of providing for the needy.
What they rejected was his teaching about helping the needy.
Incorrect.
From Luke 4:23-18
Jesus said to them, "Surely you will quote this proverb to me:
'Physician, heal yourself! Do here in your hometown what we have heard
that you did in Capernaum.' "
"I tell you the truth," HE continued, "no prophet is accepted in his
hometown. I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in
Elijah's time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and
there was a severe famine throughout the land. Yet Elijah was not sent
to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.
And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the
prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed-only Naaman the Syrian."
All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.
They got up, drove HIM out of the town, and took HIM to the brow of
the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw HIM down the
cliff. But HE walked right through the crowd and went on HIS way.
**end Scripture reading**
The Nazarenes were furious upon learning that they would not benefit
as much as those outside of Nazareth have benefited from Jesus'
ministry.
This foreshadows how the Gentiles have benefited much more from Jesus'
offer of salvation than the Jews.

May you wisely choose to be forgiven too by publicly declaring with
your mouth that "Jesus is LORD:"
