Study: the 10 Commandments define a Spirit filled life |
The 10 Commandments define a Spirit filled life. In this day, many
false teachers state that we do not need to live by the 10
Commandments. "He who says he knows God, yet keeps not his
commandments, is a liar." (1 John 2:4). Every single commandment in the
Old Testament is repeated in the New. Nothing has changed. Here is a
set of passages from the New Testament I have gathered to prove the
point, which can be useful for private Bible Study:
THE TEN BEATITUDES
Instead of starting with the ten commandments, Jesus gives ten
beatitudes. Matt 5:3-12
MUCH OF THE LAW IS PROPHETIC, FULFILLED IN JESUS
Jesus came not to destroy the law, but to fulfill it: Matt 5:17-18,
11:13
Jesus was crucified on the Passover, fulfilling it: Matt. 26:2, 17-19,
1 Cor. 5:7
Love and doing good has replaced animal sacrifices: Mark 12:33, Heb.
13:16, 1 Pet. 2:5
Animal sacrifices have been abolished: Heb. 9:9, 10:1, 3, 6, 11,
13:11-12
The temple was a pattern of the true temple in heaven: John 4:21-24,
Heb. 9:23
Circumcision is an optional ritual, symbolizing the circumcision of the
heart: Acts 15:24, Rom. 2:25-29, 1 Cor. 7:19, Gal. 2:7-12, 5:6, 6:15,
Eph. 2:11, Phil. 3:3, Col. 2:11
Only the commandments contained in ordinances were abolished: Eph. 2:15
The law contained shadows of things to come: Col. 2:16-17, Heb. 10:1
THE LAW PERTAINING TO MORALITY IS STILL BINDING
Do not break the least of God's commandments, nor teach others to do
so: Matt. 5:19-20
Keep the commandments: Matt: 19:17

If you love me, keep my commandments: John 14:15, 21, 15:10
Circumcision is optional. Keep God's commandments: 1 Cor. 7:19

will be held responsible; they will die childless.
If a man marries his brother's wife, it is an act of impurity; he

of him that smiteth him and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the
secrets: Then thou shalt cut off her hand, thine eye shall not pity her"
I was talking about the 10 commandments, not the entire law. You will
note that they are all in force as I had specifically mentioned NT
passages. The word "law" has several meanings, depending on context:
1. The 10 Commandments
2. The First Five books of Moses
3. The entire Old Testament
Many of the laws given are external rituals which have now been
abrogated. The Jewish nation was representative of a spiritual Church.
As for the death penalty, in Jewish law one was actually put to death,
but in a spiritual Church, one is outcast from the Church if one fails
to repent and persists in an unholy and sinful life.

This is an impressives complilation, and combination of scriptures! It
is trully amazing the continuity and connection that are found in
Scriptures, when they were written over such a long period of time, by
so many authors! It make one think that there actually is one Author!
When Jesus was ask about the Moral Code, He reduced the whole Law to
two commandments! Thou shalt Love God..., and thou shalt Love thy
neighbor...! Would you say that this compilation represents what you
have compiled above, and would you say this is an accurate list for
which we are responsible to obey now?
I would like to ask you a couple question though, regarding the Last
Supper. Jesus had the 12 disciples gathered together, and in the
process, of eating dinner, He instigated the New Covenant! This is
what is the basis of the communion service that Christians celebrate!
1) What was the significance of the New Covenant, in contrast to the
Old Covenant?
As a part of the New Covenant installation, He announced that He was
giving us a new Commandment!
2) What was the nature of the New Commandment, and what made it new, in
comparison to the Old Commandment? Or to the two that I have listed
above!
3) How does this New Commandment relate to the list of Commandments
that you compiled above, and how would it divide the list that you so
diligently compiled?

By "works of the law" Paul refers to acts done for the sake of
self-righteousness, or acts done outwardly: Rom. 2:17-29, 7:7-25,
10:3-4
Also, by "works of the law" Paul refers to rituals of the Mosaic

And yet, the law (of the 10 commandments) are not made void, but
established through those who receive God's Spirit in faith: Rom.

Or to the two that I have listed
above!
3) How does this New Commandment relate to the list of Commandments
that you compiled above, and how would it divide the list that you so
diligently compiled?

come in!

the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,

7 "?a?You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not ?1?leave him unpunished who takes His
name in vain.
8 "Remember ?a?the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 "?a?Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it ?a?you shall not do any work, you or your son or your
daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who ?1?stays with you.
11 "?a?For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh
day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
12 "?a?Honor your father and your mother, that your ?b?days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.

The Ten Commandments (Chap. 20)
The Ten Commandments were divided by the Lord Jesus into two sections, one covering love to God and the other covering love to one's
neighbor (Matt. 22:37-40). Some suggest that the first four commandments teach love to God, while others add the fifth. The
expression "The Lord your God" is found in the first five commandments.
I.
20:1-3 Have no other gods. This is a prohibition against the worship of many gods (polytheism) or against the worship of any other
god except Jehovah.
II.
20:4-6 Use no carved image. Not only the worship of idols but their manufacture is forbidden. This includes pictures, images, and
statues used in worship. It does not, however, include all pictures or statues, since the tabernacle contained carved cherubim.
Also, God told Moses to make a serpent of brass (Num. 21:8). The commandment undoubtedly refers to pictures or images of deity.
God is a jealous God-that is, jealous of the worship and love of His people. He visits the iniquity of the fathers upon the children
to the third and fourth generations, through inherited weaknesses, poverty, diseases, and shortened lifespan. But God's mercy
endures to thousands (of generations) of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
III.
20:7 Taking God's name ... in vain is forbidden. This means to swear by God's name that a false statement is actually true. It could
also include profanity, cursing, minced oaths, or swearing to a promise and failing to fulfill it.
IV.
20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day. First mentioned in Genesis 2:1-3, and enjoined in connection with the gathering of manna (Ex. 16),
the Sabbath was now formally given to the nation of Israel for strict observance. It was a picture of the rest which believers now
enjoy in Christ and which a redeemed creation will enjoy in the Millennium. The Sabbath is the seventh day of the week, from sundown
on Friday to sundown on Saturday. Nowhere in the ?NT? are Christians commanded to keep the Sabbath.
V.
20:12 Honor father and mother. To honor here means to obey. The verse teaches that a life of obedience to parents is the type of
life which, in general, insures length of days. A life of disobedience and sin often leads to premature death. This is the first
commandment with a promise attached (Eph. 6:2). It teaches respect for authority.
VI.
20:13 You shall not murder. This refers specifically to murder and not to capital punishment or to manslaughter. The command teaches
respect for human life.
VII.
20:14 You shall not commit adultery. This prohibition teaches respect for marriage, and warns against exploiting another person's
body. It may cover all forms of unlawful sexual behavior.
VIII.
20:15 You shall not steal. This refers to any act by which a person wrongfully deprives another person of his property. It teaches
respect for private property.
IX.
20:16 You shall not bear false witness. This commandment forbids damaging the character of another person by making statements which
are not true, and thus possibly causing him to be punished or even executed. It teaches respect for a person's reputation.
X.
20:17 You shall not covet. The tenth commandment passes from acts to thoughts, and it shows that it is sinful to lust after anything
that God never intended one to have. Paul states that this commandment produced deep conviction of sin in his life (Rom. 7:7).
20:18-21 After the Ten Commandments were given, the people were terrified by the manifestations of the divine Presence. They were
afraid they would die if God spoke to them directly, so Moses became their mediator.
20:22-26 The purpose of the Law of Moses was to show the people their sinfulness. Next, God graciously gave instructions for the
erection of an altar, reminding the people that sinners can approach God only on the ground of shed blood. The altar speaks of
Christ as the way of approach to God. Man could contribute nothing to the perfection of Christ, either by the tools of personal
effort or the steps of human achievement. Priests ascending steps in long, flowing garments might accidentally expose themselves in
a manner that would be inappropriate for such a solemn occasion.

heart: Acts 15:24, Rom. 2:25-29, 1 Cor. 7:19, Gal. 2:7-12, 5:6, 6:15,
Eph. 2:11, Phil. 3:3, Col. 2:11
Only the commandments contained in ordinances were abolished: Eph. 2:15
The law contained shadows of things to come: Col. 2:16-17, Heb. 10:1
THE LAW PERTAINING TO MORALITY IS STILL BINDING

so: Matt. 5:19-20
Keep the commandments: Matt: 19:17

Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it: Luke 11:28
God's commandment is life everlasting: John 12:50
If you love me, keep my commandments: John 14:15, 21, 15:10

THE MEANING OF "WORKS OF THE LAW" IN PAUL'S TEACHING
By "works of the law" Paul refers to acts done for the sake of
self-righteousness, or acts done outwardly: Rom. 2:17-29, 7:7-25,
10:3-4
Also, by "works of the law" Paul refers to rituals of the Mosaic
law, which are now manifested and fulfilled in Jesus: Rom. 3:2,

established through those who receive God's Spirit in faith: Rom.
3:31, 6:16-19, 8:1-16, Gal. 5:1-6
Or to the two that I have listed
above!
3) How does this New Commandment relate to the list of Commandments
that you compiled above, and how would it divide the list that you so
diligently compiled?

come in!

Which 10 Commandments are authentic? There are the Catholic, the Hebrew and
the Protestant Ten Commandments!
The differences between them are minimal and only a matter of how they
are grouped. Our focus should be directed at personal obedience and
reverence of God's Ten Commandments, NOT quibble as to how they are
enumerated.

any work, you or your son or your

11 "?a?For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that

The Ten Commandments (Chap. 20)
The Ten Commandments were divided by the Lord Jesus into two sections, one covering love to
God and the other covering love to one's
neighbor (Matt. 22:37-40). Some suggest that the first four commandments teach love to God,
while others add the fifth. The
expression "The Lord your God" is found in the first five commandments.
I.
20:1-3 Have no other gods. This is a prohibition against the worship of many gods (polytheism)
or against the worship of any other
god except Jehovah.
II.
20:4-6 Use no carved image. Not only the worship of idols but their manufacture is forbidden.
This includes pictures, images, and
statues used in worship. It does not, however, include all pictures or statues, since the
tabernacle contained carved cherubim.
Also, God told Moses to make a serpent of brass (Num. 21:8). The commandment undoubtedly
refers to pictures or images of deity.
God is a jealous God-that is, jealous of the worship and love of His people. He visits the
iniquity of the fathers upon the children
to the third and fourth generations, through inherited weaknesses, poverty, diseases, and
shortened lifespan. But God's mercy
endures to thousands (of generations) of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
III.
20:7 Taking God's name ... in vain is forbidden. This means to swear by God's name that a
false statement is actually true. It could
also include profanity, cursing, minced oaths, or swearing to a promise and failing to fulfill
it.
IV.
20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day. First mentioned in Genesis 2:1-3, and enjoined in connection
with the gathering of manna (Ex. 16),
the Sabbath was now formally given to the nation of Israel for strict observance. It was a
picture of the rest which believers now
enjoy in Christ and which a redeemed creation will enjoy in the Millennium. The Sabbath is the
seventh day of the week, from sundown
on Friday to sundown on Saturday. Nowhere in the ?NT? are Christians commanded to keep the
Sabbath.
V.
20:12 Honor father and mother. To honor here means to obey. The verse teaches that a life of
obedience to parents is the type of
life which, in general, insures length of days. A life of disobedience and sin often leads to
premature death. This is the first
commandment with a promise attached (Eph. 6:2). It teaches respect for authority.
VI.
20:13 You shall not murder. This refers specifically to murder and not to capital punishment
or to manslaughter. The command teaches
respect for human life.
VII.
20:14 You shall not commit adultery. This prohibition teaches respect for marriage, and warns
against exploiting another person's
body. It may cover all forms of unlawful sexual behavior.
VIII.
20:15 You shall not steal. This refers to any act by which a person wrongfully deprives
another person of his property. It teaches
respect for private property.
IX.
20:16 You shall not bear false witness. This commandment forbids damaging the character of
another person by making statements which
are not true, and thus possibly causing him to be punished or even executed. It teaches
respect for a person's reputation.
X.
20:17 You shall not covet. The tenth commandment passes from acts to thoughts, and it shows
that it is sinful to lust after anything
that God never intended one to have. Paul states that this commandment produced deep
conviction of sin in his life (Rom. 7:7).
20:18-21 After the Ten Commandments were given, the people were terrified by the
manifestations of the divine Presence. They were
afraid they would die if God spoke to them directly, so Moses became their mediator.
20:22-26 The purpose of the Law of Moses was to show the people their sinfulness. Next, God
graciously gave instructions for the
erection of an altar, reminding the people that sinners can approach God only on the ground of
shed blood. The altar speaks of
Christ as the way of approach to God. Man could contribute nothing to the perfection of
Christ, either by the tools of personal
effort or the steps of human achievement. Priests ascending steps in long, flowing garments
might accidentally expose themselves in
a manner that would be inappropriate for such a solemn occasion.

heart: Acts 15:24, Rom. 2:25-29, 1 Cor. 7:19, Gal. 2:7-12, 5:6, 6:15,
Eph. 2:11, Phil. 3:3, Col. 2:11
Only the commandments contained in ordinances were abolished: Eph. 2:15
The law contained shadows of things to come: Col. 2:16-17, Heb. 10:1

so: Matt. 5:19-20

Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it: Luke 11:28
God's commandment is life everlasting: John 12:50
If you love me, keep my commandments: John 14:15, 21, 15:10
Circumcision is optional. Keep God's commandments: 1 Cor. 7:19

3:19-22, 27-28, 7:1-4, 9:30-32, Gal. 2:11-16, Heb. 7:19

The Eastgate is Open, the King is in Residence! Whosoever Will, may
come in!

Instead of starting with the ten commandments, Jesus gives ten

heart: Acts 15:24, Rom. 2:25-29, 1 Cor. 7:19, Gal. 2:7-12, 5:6, 6:15,
Eph. 2:11, Phil. 3:3, Col. 2:11
Only the commandments contained in ordinances were abolished: Eph. 2:15
The law contained shadows of things to come: Col. 2:16-17, Heb. 10:1
THE LAW PERTAINING TO MORALITY IS STILL BINDING

so: Matt. 5:19-20

God's commandment is life everlasting: John 12:50
