LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. -- Tuesday afternoon searchers found the body of a
16-year-old girl who disappeared in the Susquehanna River more than a week
ago.

Officials said a volunteer standing on top of the Norman Wood Bridge spotted
the body of Nicole Barlow, 16, in an area of the river that had been drained
for the search.
"This was very huge for the family, and for all of us, to find her body,"
said family friend Suzanne Kreider.
The bridge is about a mile south of the Holtwood Dam, which is where Barlow
was last seen on April 29 after the boat she was riding in went over the
dam. The Susquehanna River was drained from the dam to the Norman Wood
Bridge to give searchers a better chance of finding the teen. The draining
was a drastic step, but one officials said they were will to take for the
family.

With the water shut off, river levels lowered. It was possible to walk
across the riverbed between the dam and the bridge.
Up to 100 searchers took part in the search. The effort took days to
coordinate. Dams above Safe Harbor gradually released water over the
weekend. Searchers said said Tuesday's efforts were their last hope of
finding Barlow's body.
Officials planned to begin letting water back into the drained stretch of
the Susquehanna Tuesday evening.
