The atheist and the Grief Councelor |
Atheist
"My wife is dead, she doesn't exist anymore. It's me that's got the problems"
Councelor (whose role is that of a psychologist specialising in grief councelling)
"You are being cruel to your wife's soul. You are not allowing her to pass over"
... after further conversation ...
Atheist
"What is more important - love of God or love of one's fellow men?"
Councelor
"Love of God of course!"
The councelor recommends to his supervisor that the atheist should be offered an
appointment with a psychiatrist.
The atheist had been refered to the councelor by his family doctor. The councelor
worked for a private agency offering general councelling services to family doctors.
The atheist goes back to his doctor and asks for a referral to an atheist councelor.
The patient/doctor relationship abruptly deteriorates.
The offer of a psychiatric appointment and the patient's failure to accept is noted in the
patient's medical records.
Patient contacts local Health Authority - and is told that there is no provision for atheists
to be refered to atheist councelors. There is, however, provision for people of various
religious denominations to be referred to someone of their own faith.
Patient goes to local library and reads books on grief written by atheist psychologists.
Patient gains a deep understanding of the nature of the grief experience.
