GODıS UNCHANGING WORD
The Bible and the glass slipper
To Read: Job 34-36
To Know:
³Beloved, being very eager to write to you of our common salvation, I found
it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith which was
once for all delivered to the saints.² (Jude 3)
The closing speaker at the denominational meeting in 1985 was, as I said
yesterday, an angry woman. She was furious at my message that the Word of
God was altogether trustworthy. My sermon the previous evening employed an
illustration taken from our home life. Each evening we retired to a home
theater in the basement to watch a home movie and an excerpt from a
Hollywood film. Our children voted night after night for the snippet we
owned of Cinderella. The youngsters never tired of watching with
anticipation while the prince searched for his love with only a glass
slipper to identify her. After describing the scene I reminded my hearers
that had the prince sent his envoy into the kingdom with the wrong slipper
he would have been guaranteed to find the wrong girl. In conclusion, I held
the Bible aloft and said that this book is the slipper sent from God by
which we are to identify his true Son. If, therefore, we add to or take away
from this word we will be guaranteed to find a false Jesus. Not everyone
exulted at what they heard.
At the close of her sermon the next day, the woman preacher, mocking me,
thrust her Bible heavenward and said, if this book is right that a curse
will fall on those who add to or subtract from its words, then let that
curse fall on me. Many in the United Church of Christ do not believe the
claims of scripture to be the very Word of God. Many freely tamper with the
text. Some accept the Koran as a God-given addition to the scriptures. They
believe Mohammadıs claim to be a further manifestation of Christ. This is
not to elevate Mohammad as another savior; it is that they diminish Christ
to being merely another prophet. Should such a wholesale attack on the Bible
go unchallenged? Does not the Lord want those of us in the U.C.C. who
believe that the Bible is his divinely inspired word to take our stand and
contend for the faith?
