ATLANTA -- A metro Atlanta is mother behind bars after police say she beat
her 2-year-old so severely the child died.
The Department of Family and Children Services has a history with the
family. The agency vows it will get to the bottom of what happened inside
the Atlanta home leading up to the child's murder.
Twenty-nine-year-old Shandrell Banks has now been charged with the beating
death of her 2-year-old daughter, Nateyonna.
The Director of DFCS confirmed to Channel 2 that she has called for an
outside investigation after the death of 2-year-old Nateyonna Banks.
Atlanta Police investigators say Shandrell took her daughter to
Hughes-Spaulding Children's Hospital earlier this month from the family home
on Humphries Drive in Southwest Atlanta. The little girl died one day
later - the medical examiner says she died of blunt force trauma.
Investigators say Shandrell Banks beat her daughter to death.
DFCS says up until July - Nateyonna was in state custody. But Shandrell's
brother says his sister suffered from depression and he recently called DFCS
to take her daughter. He says DFCS never responded to his calls.
"I am personally outraged at this point in time which is why I canceled
everything I'm doing this afternoon, I'm giving my immediate attention to
it. I have about 15 staff member upstairs and I've begun my own
investigation," said DFCS Director, Mary Dean Harvey.
