HUNTINGTON, Utah (CNN) -- A narrow hole drilled into a Utah mine may have
missed a cavity where six miners are trapped, a federal official said
Friday.
A truck delivers fencing Friday to be used in the effort to find six men
trapped in a Utah coal mine.
Air tests overnight suggested there may be oxygen levels of about 20 percent
in the area where the miners are believed to be, said Richard Stickler,
assistant secretary of the Department of Labor for mine safety and health.
Later tests found oxygen levels at about 7 percent -- too little to
survive -- but that may be an indication that the drill hole drifted as it
was being bored and ended up in a different part of the mine, Stickler said.
A second, larger hole being drilled into the mine has a better chance of
accuracy, Stickler said.
"We all should continue to have hope," Stickler said at a news conference at
the mine.
Officials said earlier Friday that a microphone lowered into the cavity had
detected no sound.
There has been no communication with the six miners since Monday's mine
collapse.
The 2.5-inch bore hole reached the cavity in the central Utah mine more than
1,800 feet below the surface about 10 p.m. MT Thursday (midnight ET),
Stickler said.
Bob Murray, CEO of Murray Energy Corp., said no conclusions could be drawn
from the lack of sound detected.
"The fact that we have not picked up any sound I believe should not be
interpreted as bad news," Murray said.
"There could be a number of factors as to why sounds in there might not be
picked up, and I wouldn't look at it as good or bad news," he said.
"Unfortunately, we were not able to gain communication with miners
underground," he said.
The second, bigger bore hole -- more than 8 inches in diameter -- should
reach the cavity late Friday or early Saturday, Stickler said.
"We feel that we will have a better chance of maintaining that hole [the
larger one] and put a TV camera down it," he said.
Murray Energy Vice President Rob Moore said progress on the bigger hole was
better Friday than Thursday.
Murray said Thursday that if the miners survived the mine collapse, they
could continue to live on fresh air, food and water supplied through the
holes until crews can remove tons of coal and rock that clogged a collapsed
tunnel. See where the miners are thought to be trapped »
That process could take four or five more days, he said early Friday.
Between what they had packed with their lunches and what was stored in the
mine, the men had about a week's worth of water, Murray said. See the
rescue efforts at the mine »
While the mining company has not released the miners' names, family and
friends have confirmed to CNN the identities of four of them as Kerry
Allred, Carlos Payan, Manuel Sanchez and Brandon Phillips.
Murray has insisted a magnitude-3.9 earthquake caused the mine collapse, and
has said at least 10 "aftershocks" have been recorded, with seismic activity
earlier wiping out more than 300 feet of progress and halting rescue efforts
temporarily.
Seismologists and geophysicists have not been as sure, saying the seismic
activity they measured appeared to stem from the mine's collapse.
On Thursday, University of California-Berkeley seismologist Douglas Dreger
said the data show the shaking detected bore the signature of a collapse and
"not a tectonic earthquake."
Experts have said the "aftershocks" could be the rock adjusting after the
collapse.
About 50 representatives of the Mine Safety and Health Administration are on
the site, Stickler said. He said the mine is in compliance with federal
laws.
Inspectors cited it for 30 violations this year, MSHA records show.
Recommended fines in the 10 cases involving penalties ranged from $60 to
$524.
The mine employs about 65 people and last year yielded nearly 605,000 tons
of coal, according to the MSHA.
