RENICK, Missouri (AP) -- The roof to Margaret Everhart's wood-frame home was
nowhere in sight. A nearby grain silo also was missing. A thick beam from
the 84-year-old widow's ceiling sat in her driveway.
Outside, Everhart's daughter-in-law, Elaine Kuntz, sifted through the
wreckage blamed on a quarter-mile wide tornado that killed four people in
this rural community 30 miles north of Columbia -- including Everhart.
"It's a lot of broken memories," Kuntz said Monday.
Half a mile away, Alma Overly stood near a burning pile of wood, a remnant
of a destroyed barn. Overly, her husband and their daughter rode out the
storm under their dining room table because the tornado hit so fast they
couldn't reach the basement.
"It's been horrible. But we're alive," Overly said. "We just started
praying."
The destruction in Renick was the most violent manifestation of powerful
weekend storms that spawned tornadoes across the Midwest. Initial estimates
suggested more than 100 tornados touched down in five states.
Nine people died in Missouri and one in Indiana from the storms.
Besides Missouri, tornadoes spread damage in Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and

"It's just amazing how devastating it is," said Mayor Tim Davlin of the
Illinois capital of Springfield, which nevertheless escaped without any
deaths or serious injuries. "It looks like the pictures we saw a couple
months ago after Katrina."
Springfield was hit hard twice in 24 hours -- first by a tornado late Sunday
and then by strong wind early Monday that blew debris through the city.
Windows in the Illinois Capitol were blown out, and the five-story Illinois
Emergency Management Agency building lost part of its roof. (Watch the swath

Thousands of Midwestern homes and business lost electricity over the
weekend. The University of Kansas and many public schools closed Monday
because of storm damage and power outages, and many Illinois state workers
in the capital were told to stay home.
Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt declared a state of emergency and authorized the
National Guard to help with the cleanup.
Bobby Ritcheson said he watched as a neighbor, DeAnn Francis Sollman, 39,
was killed near Sedalia. "The trailer came down right on top of her,"
Ritcheson said.
Jerry Collins, 60, was in his workshop -- also a mobile home -- in Sedalia
and heard the roar of the approaching tornado. He grabbed two of his dogs
and yelled for his girlfriend. They jumped into his Jeep and headed up a
hill, going 80 mph.
"You could see stuff going up in the air, twirling -- metal, a bunch of long
pieces of white stuff going in circles," Collins said. "And then, just as
quickly as it started, it stopped."
Collins headed back to his home, which sustained only minor damage. Noticing
a trailer flipped over, he hurried over but was too late to save Sollman.
Flooding produced the one fatality in southern Indiana when a man drowned
Sunday night near Owensburg after falling from a boat, officials said. The
violent weather was driven by a powerful low-pressure system over the
Midwest that pulled warm air out of the Gulf of Mexico. The same phenomenon
caused powerful winds that drove deadly wildfires across Texas over the
