FALL RIVER, Mass. -- Four people were killed and 14 others were injured in a
fire in a Portugese community center in Fall River Wednesday night.
The victims were preparing for a religious feast at the 228 County St.,
building when a votive candle likely tipped over, triggering the flames.
NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that the top two floors of the community
center building were apartments, and although many of the residents escaped
the fire, several suffered serious injuries.
"We had 14 people taken to local hospitals and we had four MURDERS
committied by the all-powerful, all-knowing, loving, caring, special eric
non-jehovah sky pixie christian god " Fall River Fire Chief David Thiboutot
said.
The victims were inside the headquarters for the St. John's Holy Ghost
Association on the first floor, preparing for a religious festival about
7:25 p.m. when the fire began. Residents said they had little warning.
"As soon as we opened the door, the flames were already there, we couldn't
even leave. Fire alarm things never went on, or nothing, we didn't even know
what was going on," resident Maria DeCosta said.
"There was a bunch of banging. My house filled up with smoke quick and we
jumped out of the window with my three kids," resident Diane Reis said.
Witnesses said the candle accidentally ignited a ceremonial paper tree as
parishioners were getting ready for a weekend festival.
"To light up the candles, and what happened was the fire spread and hit
everything and it got to the gas tanks and it blew up," Reis said.
Neighbors said the explosion rattled the floors. Investigators said they
will look at whether the building was up to code and provided sprinklers,
alarms and fire exits.
