CULPEPER, Virginia (AP) -- A 10-year-old girl running to catch her school
bus fell under its wheels and was killed, police said.
Emily Nicole Woodward apparently fell in front of the bus after it had just
completed a stop, officials said. The accident happened Wednesday, the first
day of the new school year.
"It was one of those situations where nobody could do anything," said Brian
Morris, who lives nearby. He went to the scene when he heard the girl's
mother cry for help.
"First thing I heard this morning was, 'Oh, my baby. My baby, she's under
the school bus,"' Morris said.
Eight students were on the bus, Culpeper County Public Schools said in a
statement.
The bus driver, who had been driving for the school system for 25 years, was
treated at the hospital and released. No charges were filed.
