LAGOS, Nigeria (CNN) -- A Nigerian passenger plane crashed and burned
Saturday at an airport in Port Harcourt, killing 103 of the 110 people on
board, Nigeria's federal aviation authority said.
Seven surviving passengers were taken to the hospital, Chika Onah of the
Nigerian Red Cross told CNN.
A search-and-rescue operation is under way at the airport, and bodies are
still being recovered, said Femi Shittu, acting director of Nigeria's
federal aviation authority.
The domestic Sosoliso Airlines plane was coming in from the nation's capital
of Abuja during bad weather, though it remained unclear what caused the
crash, Nigerian government spokesman Femi Fani-Kayode said.
"We will get to the bottom of it, we will ascertain the cause and the
government and Mr. President (Olusegun Obasanjo) will do everything within
his power to ensure that this sort of thing does not happen within our
airspace again," he said.
Witnesses said an explosion and massive fireball followed the crash,
engulfing the plane in flames. The Associated Press reported that the plane
was a DC-9.
Government spokesman Femi Fani-Kayode pledged a full investigation into the
cause of the crash.
Sosoliso Airlines, a Nigerian company, was established in 1994 and began
domestic flights to six cities in 2000. There are no reports of previous
crashes involving the airline.
An airport worker described a horrific scene at Port Harcourt, according to
the AP. He said burned bodies lay across the landing area after the plane
broke into pieces.
"The place where I'm standing now is scattered with corpses," told the AP.
He said the dead -- "many of them burned beyond recognition" -- were being
taken to mortuaries.
The plane had shattered "into many pieces, scattered all over the ground,"
the airport employee told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Fani-Kayode said Nigeria's federal aviation authority has launched a
search-and-rescue operation at the airport, but had no details on casualties
Nigerian airports have come under criticism in recent months following a
string of near-misses, including one at Port Harcourt in which an Air France
passenger jet crashed into a herd of cows on the runway, according to the
AP.
International airlines briefly suspended flights at Lagos' international
airport because of holes in the runway, the wire service said.
Saturday's crash comes less than two months after a Bellview Airlines plane
went down north of Lagos during bad weather, killing all 117 people on
board.
One of the passengers killed in the October 22 crash was an American. Maj.
Joseph J. Haydon Jr., 40, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, was assigned to the
Office of Defense Cooperation in the U.S. Embassy in Abuja.
