JESUS MAKES US NEW

The picture this world gives


To Read: 1 Kings 19,20


To Know:

³Truly thou dost set them in slippery places; thou dost make them fall to
ruin.² (Ps.73: 18)

At breakfast we sat looking out across the valley at Mount Blanc. Glaciers
that never melt blanket Europeıs highest peak. My mind drifted back to a day
over thirty years before when we were climbing on that summit. Miriam spied
a ledge protruding from the glacier and wanted her picture sitting on the
rock. She climbed across the glacier only to discover that the rock was the
edge of a cliff several thousand feet high. She was on a slippery slope only
one misstep from catastrophe.

God offended the Psalmist when the singer saw the wicked prosper and the
godly suffer. God showed him that the rock on which the wicked seemed so
safe was actually on the edge of calamity. They were a single misstep from
their doom. Those who live in defiance of Godıs command to trust in the name
of his Son, Jesus Christ, will plunge into the abyss. Jesus is the only rock
on which it is safe to stand.

That day atop Mount Blanc, Miriam climbed safely back to the trail. Every
step was terror filled. Should the snow start to slide she would be gone.


To Do:

The photo of Miriam sitting on that alpine ledge does not show the real
danger she was in. The picture this world gives us conceals the chasm into
which sinners will eventually plunge. The breath of life belongs to the Lord
and is loaned to us. On that day when we return our breath to the Lord we
will have already decided whether we will stay on an icy glacier or step
onto the rock that is Christ.


To Ask:

Father, thank you for sending your Son to be the rock of ages on whom we can
stand forever.
