The Role of God's Spirit
The following is a list of the NT verses identifying the Holy Spirit
from the NIV. I tried to capture the quality of the Spirit from each
verse and any error is unintentional. My understanding or observation
may be different from yours.
The Holy Spirit:
Luke 11:13 is a gift from God
Luke 12:12 is a teacher
John 14:15- 17, 26 is a Counselor
Acts 1:16 speaks to us through others
Acts 2:2 comes upon us with power
Acts 2:3 is a source of energy
Acts 2:4 is likened to water, causes us to do things we cannot do on
our own, and enables us
Acts 2:33 is a promise of God
Acts 2:38 is a gift
Acts 4:25 is spoken through others
Acts 4:31 fills us and causes us to speak the word of God boldly
Acts 5:3 can be lied to
Acts 5:9 can be tested
Acts 5:32 is a witness: is given by God to those who obey Him.
Acts 6:10 is a force man cannot stand against
Acts 7:51 is a force that men try to resist
Acts 7:55 allows us to see beyond our understanding
Acts 7:59 is a life-force
Acts 8:16 comes to us separate from baptism
Acts 8:17 sometimes comes to us by the laying on of hands
Acts 8:19 is sometimes not understood
Acts 8:29 talks to us and gives us directions
Acts 8:39 moves us to other places
Acts 9:17 sends others to us
Acts 9:31 encourages us
Acts 10:19 tells us of future events and gives us understanding
Acts 10:38 is an anointment of God and is powerful
Acts 10:44 comes upon us as we listen to the word of God
Acts 10:45 is a gift and can be poured out on those that we do not
understand as worthy.
Acts 10:47 can be received
Acts 11:12 tells us things that we can trust
Acts 11:15 comes upon others as we speak the word of God
Acts 11:16 is likened to water, and we can be baptized with the Holy
Spirit
Acts 11:28 allows us to prophesy
Acts 13:2 gives us instructions
Acts 13:4 gives us directions
Acts 13:9 empowers us to do the work of God
Acts 13:52 is synonymous with and exists alongside joy.
Acts 15:8 is a gift of acceptance by God
Acts 15:28 is able to determine what is good and what is not good
Acts 16:6 keeps us from certain things
Acts 16:7 keeps us from doing certain things
Acts 19:2 is given to us after we believe, not before
Acts 19:6 enables us to do what we cannot normally do on our own
Acts 20:22 compels us to do things we do not know
Acts 20:23 warns us and makes us aware of conditions beyond our
realm of understanding
Acts 20:28 gives us responsibilities
Acts 21:4 speaks to us through others
Acts 21:11 communicates to others through our actions
Acts 28:25 spoke through the prophets
Romans 1:4 is Holy
Romans 2:29 is associated with the heart, not the written code
Romans 5:5 is a conduit in which Gods love can be poured to us
Romans 8:2 is the law of life and sets us free from the law of sin
and death
Romans 8:4 We live according to the Holy Spirit
Romans 8:6 can control our minds. The Holy Spirit gives us life and
peace
Romans 8:9 can live in us. The Holy Spirit marks us as belonging to
Christ
Romans 8:11 is a part of God. The Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the
dead. The Holy Spirit gives life to our mortal bodies
Romans 8:13 allows us to live
Romans 8:14 Those who are led by the Holy Spirit of God are sons of
God.
Romans 8:15 The Holy Spirit joins us to our Father as his child
Romans 8:16 testifies for us
Romans 8:23 We are the first fruits of the Holy Spirit
Romans 8:26 helps us in our weakness. The Holy Spirit intercedes
for us
Romans 8:27 has a mind
Romans 11:8 is synonymous with life
Romans 14:17 is righteousness, peace and joy
Romans 15:13 overflows us with hope. The Holy Spirit is powerful
Romans 15:16 sanctifies us as acceptable offerings to God
Romans 15:19 gives us signs and performs miracles
Romans 15:30 carries love
1 Corinthians 2:4 has power that can be demonstrated
1 Corinthians 2:6 gives us wisdom
1 Corinthians 2:10 searches all things, even the deep things of God
1 Corinthians 2:11 No one knows the thoughts of God except his Holy
Spirit. As we begin to understand the Holy Spirit, we begin to
understand our God
1 Corinthians 2:12 helps us to understand what God has given us.
1 Corinthians 2:13 causes us to speak with understanding apart from
human wisdom
1 Corinthians 2:14 The understanding of the Holy Spirit cannot be
discerned by those without it
1 Corinthians 3:16 Gods Holy Spirit lives within us
1 Corinthians 6:11 washes us, sanctifies us and justifies us
1 Corinthians 6:19 lives in the temples of our bodies
1 Corinthians 12:3 cannot curse Jesus Christ. Only the Holy Spirit
can cause someone to say "Jesus is Lord"
1 Corinthians 12:4 is a unique gift that is common to all spiritual
gifts
1 Corinthians 12:7 is a manifestation given for the common good
1 Corinthians 12:8 gives different gifts
1 Corinthians 12:9 gives the message of faith, healing, wisdom,
knowledge,
1 Corinthians 12:10 gives miraculous powers, prophesy, speaking in
different tongues, interpretation of tongues, discernment,
1 Corinthians 12:11 The gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to us as
God determines
1 Corinthians 12:13 We are baptized in the Holy Spirit, we drink the
Holy Spirit
2 Corinthians 1:22 can be placed in our hearts as a guarantee of our
future
2 Corinthians 3:3 is used to write into our lives to communicate
with others
2 Corinthians 3:6 gives life
2 Corinthians 3:8 is a ministry of God
2 Corinthians 3:17 The Holy Spirit is the Lord. The Holy Spirit
gives us freedom. "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit
of the Lord is, there is freedom."
2 Corinthians 3:18 The Lord is the Holy Spirit. "And we, who with
unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed
into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the
Lord, who is the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 5:5 is a guarantee of God of what is to come
2 Corinthians 13:14 provides fellowship
Galatians 3:2 is received by believing what you hear and understand
Galatians 3:3 There is a beginning with the Holy Spirit
Galatians 3:5 is used to work miracles
Galatians 3:14 is a promise of God
Galatians 4:6 The Holy Spirit calls out "Abba, Father"
Galatians 5:5 We live our lives through the power of the Holy
Spirit
Galatians 5:17 The Holy Spirit and the sinful nature of man are in
conflict with each other
Galatians 5:18 leads us
Galatians 5:22- 26 "The fruit of the Holy Spirit is love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-
control. The Holy Spirit is not conceited, provoking or envious"
Galatians 5:25 walks with us
Galatians 6:8 One who sows to please the Holy Spirit reaps eternal
life
Ephesians 1:13 is a promised seal of God. The Holy Spirit is given
to us upon our belief in Jesus Christ
Ephesians 1:17 "I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation,
so that you may know him better."
Ephesians 2:18 The Holy Spirit is our access to the
Ephesians 2:22 We are dwellings built to house in which our God
lives by his Spirit
Ephesians 4:3 is unity
Ephesians 4:30 The Holy Spirit of God seals us for the day of
redemption
Ephesians 5:18 fills us
Ephesians 6:17 The sword of the Holy Spirit is the word of God
Philippians 1:19 assists others by helping us
Philippians 2:1 provides fellowship among us
Philippians 2:2 is one
Philippians 3:3 we worship by the Holy Spirit of God
1 Thessalonians 1:6 gives joy
1 Thessalonians 4:8 God gives us his Holy Spirit
1 Thessalonians 5:19 has fire
2 Thessalonians 2:13 The sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit saves
us
1 Timothy 3:16 "Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is
great: He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen
by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the
world, was taken up in glory."
1 Timothy 4:1 speaks of future things
2 Timothy 1:14 helps us to guard the good that is entrusted to us.
The Holy Spirit lives in us
Titus 3:5 The Holy Spirit renews us and gives us new life
Hebrews 3:7 warns us against sin
Hebrews 6:4 can be shared by many
Hebrews 9:8 "The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into
the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first
tabernacle was still standing."
Hebrews 9:14 is eternal
Hebrews 10:15 testifies of our God to us
Hebrews 10:29 Can be insulted
James 2:26 is life
1 Peter 1:2 works in our lives to sanctify us for our Father God
1 Peter 1:12 preaches the gospel to us
1 Peter 3:18 makes us alive
2 Peter 1:21 carries the word of God through us
1 John 3:24 gives us knowledge of God
1 John 4:2 can be recognized
1 John 5:6 testifies the truth of Jesus Christ to us because the
Holy Spirit is the truth
1 John 5:8 "The Spirit is one of three: the Spirit, the water and
the blood; and the three are in agreement."
Jude 1:20 carries our prayers to God
Revelation 1:10 is a place one is able to be in
Revelation 2:7 speaks to churches
Revelation 14:13 speaks in a clearly understandable language
Revelation 22:17
"The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say,
"Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him
take the free gift of the water of life."
