The Skeptic's Annotated Bible: Corrected and Explained, The Collegiate Workbook (Foreword) |
Hi everyone,
I'm happy to announce that Mike Gendron wrote the foreword for my workbook
that I'm writing. This workbook will accompany the CD-ROM e-book and will
have about 300 fill-in, short answer, and essay questions and the answers
will be in the back.
The workbook will be completed in a few days and will be printed, bound, and
ready for shipping within a week or two. Here is Mike's foreword:
Foreword by Mike Gendron
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." Under divine inspiration,
the prophet Hosea wrote those words to encourage God's people to seek a
deeper understanding of Him through the Scriptures. The same exhortation can
be applied today because the church is living in times of great deception.
When Christians do not have a solid foundation of biblical knowledge they
can easily be swept away by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men
and by craftiness in deceitful scheming (Eph. 4:14). Without a knowledge of
the truth, there can be no discernment and without discernment, there can be
no protection against deception.
If we are to know who God is, who we are and what God desires of us we must
study the Bible. Only through the word of God can we know how to worship,
pray, witness, work, relate to others and live for God. The mark of a true
disciple of Jesus Christ is one who abides in His word. Only by abiding in
His word can we know the truth, and by knowing the truth we can be set free
from the bondage of sin, deception and legalism.
Why should we study the Bible? It is the most authoritative, influential and
powerful book ever written. God chose forty men to pen His word as they were
carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21). The writers claim they were
transmitting the very word of God, infallible and authoritative to the
highest degree. Since it is impossible for God to lie, His word must become
the standard by which we discern truth from error (Hebrews 6:18; 1 John
4:6). God has exalted His Word above all things, even equal to His holy name
(Psalm 138:2). His word is sufficient to function as the sole, infallible
rule of faith. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for
every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
God's word is sufficient...
to know the mystery of Christ - "that by revelation there was made known to
me the mystery, as I wrote before in brief. And by referring to this, when
you read you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ."
Ephesians 3:3-4
to receive eternal life - "but these have been written that you may believe
that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have
life in His name." John 20:31
to know you have eternal life - "These things I have written to you who
believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you
have eternal life." 1 John 5:13
to know church conduct - "I write so that you may know how one ought to
conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living
God, the pillar and support of the truth." 1 Timothy 3:15
to avoid sin - "I am writing these things to you that you may not sin. And
if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the
righteous." 1 John 2:1
to recognize commands - "If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, let
him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord's
commandment." 1 Corinthians 14:37
to avoid pride - "you might learn not to exceed what is written, in order
that no one of you might become arrogant in behalf of one against the
other." 1 Corinthians 4:6
to have joy - "And these things we write, so that our joy may be made
complete." 1 John 1:4
As you study the Scriptures "may the God of hope fill you with all joy and
peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy
Spirit (Rom. 15:13).

I hear that that your book received high praise from within some of our
more outstanding academic institutions:
"100% on form and 100% on content! A+ work!" - Dr. Roy Wallace,
Louisiana Baptist University, April 17, 2003.
And more praise from that most distinguished American scientist:
"It's about time someone corrected that awful book (referring to 'The
Skeptic's Annotated Bible')." - Dr. Kent Hovind, Creation Science
Evangelism, August 30, 2003.
High praise indeed, the Dean of an unaccredited institution of "higher
learning" (Wallace), and a proven liar and fraud (Hovind).
Glad to see that you are maintaining your usual academic rigor.

believe, and she will be saved.” 51 When he came to the house, he did
not allow anyone to enter with him, except Peter, John, and James, and
the child’s father and mother. 52 They were all weeping and wailing
for her; but he said, “Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping.”
53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54But he took
her by the hand and called out, “Child, get up!” 55 Her spirit
returned, and she got up at once.
So if her spirit returned, she was dead, and Jesus lied when he said
she was only sleeping.

2 Thessalonians 2:11 For this reason God sends them a powerful

Deal with it!
Luke 8:49 While he was still speaking, someone came from the leader's

In case, we learn about the nature of death, and more importantly, of the
nature of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
God is in charge of life and of death. Christ is here either a liar as you
say or God himself, as He can treat death as nothing but sleep. Let one who
is not God try this, and they cannot. The devil and all his angels cannot
bring the dead to life. The most they might be able to do is produce some
walking undead zombie, and that is not what we see happening at the command
of God here 'Talitha kumi!'.
This is another case where we have to say that either Christ appears
unworthy of any respect, or else should be worshipped as God.

I don't have to deal with it. It isn't true.
But it does portray God as a liar and deceiver, which is the issue
under discussion.

But it is God portrayed in the Bible as a liar.
God is in charge of life and of death.
According to your mythology.
Christ is here either a liar as you say or God himself,
Or as a fictional hero from the pen of Gospel writers who never met
the man who died on Calvary at Pilate's hands.
as He can treat death as nothing but sleep.
Said he, evading the issue with furious rationalization as is the
habit of the compulsively devout.
Let one who is not God try this, and they cannot.
In fiction they can, as this case exemplifies.
The devil and all his angels cannot bring the dead to life.
According to your mythology.
The most they might be able to do is produce some

the command of God here 'Talitha kumi!'.
Command of God or tall tale of Gospel writer?
This is another case where we have to say that either Christ appears
unworthy of any respect, or else should be worshipped as God.
I vote for the former.

God simply allows a lying spirit to enact His judgment on sinners. The
spirits are at His disposal and He may use them to punish those that reject
Him.
If God let a used car salesman lie to you because of your sins and you
didn't investigate the claim, then whose fault would it be? You sinned.
You believed a lie. You didn't check the claim against the Word (or against
the truth, in this case). Don't blame God. Blame the sinner.
Ezekiel 14:9If a prophet is deceived and speaks a word, I, the LORD,
have deceived that prophet,
God says that he can send deceivers as a test to the faithful.
And sending deceivers is lying.
God is stating that people who believe false prophets will be held
accountable for it. Since God is so sovereign and completely in control,
the scriptures sometimes state that He does things that He merely lets
happen. Likewise, in this case, the Hebrew scriptures are indicating that
He lets these false prophets believe and tell lies.
Ezekiel 20:25 Moreover I gave them statutes that were not good and
ordinances by which they could not live.
That's so that the Gospel could come later.
It's still lying.
* God didn't "give them statutes that weren't good." He "gave them up to
statutes that weren't good." There is no evidence that God ever gave His
people evil statutes that would hurt them. Furthermore, the context of this
text indicates the Israelites' decision to choose other gods and God's
decision to let them go; for a time.
"Therefore I also gave them up to statutes that were not good, and judgments
by which they could not live; (NKJV)
2 Thessalonians 2:11 For this reason God sends them a powerful
delusion, leading them to believe what is false,
Deal with it!
I don't have to deal with it. It isn't true.
But it does portray God as a liar and deceiver, which is the issue
under discussion.
This verse is better understood by reading the verses before it and after
it. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 read, "The coming of the lawless one is
according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,
and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did
not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this
reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie,
that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had
pleasure in unrighteousness." This passage of scripture is plainly saying
that the ones who reject God before the "coming of the lawless one" (which
occurs after the rapture) will not trust, believe or accept God after the
rapture. Their delusion and rejection of God will continue through the
rapture and the tribulation and they will not trust, believe or accept God.
Luke 8:49 While he was still speaking, someone came from the
leader's house to say, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the
teacher any longer." 50 When Jesus heard this, he replied, "Do not
fear. Only believe, and she will be saved." 51 When he came to the
house, he did not allow anyone to enter with him, except Peter,
John, and James, and the child's father and mother. 52 They were

she was dead. 54But he took her by the hand and called out, "Child,

So if her spirit returned, she was dead, and Jesus lied when he said
she was only sleeping.
In case, we learn about the nature of death, and more importantly,
of the nature of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
But it is God portrayed in the Bible as a liar.
Leave it to the unbeliever to get angry at God for raising the dead.
In Luke 8:52, the word "sleep" can be used figuratively. It's the same
Greek word used in Ephesians 5:14. It reads, "Therefore He says: "Awake,
you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light."
You would profit from my book (http://skepticsannotatedbible.org). As you

The latter case seems to me hardly more difficult

case of supposed change" - Darwin, 1863.

This appears to be accurate so far - you're only applying the
connotations you 'feel' to it, not taking what it says at face
value. If God allows you to be tempted, or deceived, by someone,
that doesn't mean God did it, or that it's his fault. Take
responsibility for your own actions; you're not a kid (are you?) and

Is it fair? As you phrase it, no, but then that's not what God
asked Adam to do, nor was it expected. Adam had no obligation to
outwit anyone; God told him not to do something - this doesn't call
for any wits, merely obedience. Adam made his own choice, apart
from God, and as this is a great example you've chosen, I've snipped
everything above it since it takes care of that as well.

Adam didn't know right from wrong so he didn't know it was wrong to
disobey God. Adam also had zero experience of everything. He was like
a newborn baby. He didn't know what God was or what it mean to disobey
God or what a talking snake looked like or eve how they spoke despite
the fact they are deaf. God would have known all this and would have
known the outcome of the temptation that he placed in front of Adam.
Adam cannot therefore be held accountable for his actions.

God simply allows a lying spirit to enact His judgment on sinners. The

The issue isn't whether God is justified in lying.
The issue is whether it is POSSIBLE for God to lie.
If God let a used car salesman lie to you because of your sins and you
didn't investigate the claim, then whose fault would it be? You sinned.
You believed a lie. You didn't check the claim against the Word (or against
the truth, in this case). Don't blame God. Blame the sinner.
Blame isn't the issue. Can God lie? That's the issue, According to
this passage of the Bible the answer is yes. According to other
passages, no. Conclusion: these are the opinions of men.
Ezekiel 14:9If a prophet is deceived and speaks a word, I, the LORD,
have deceived that prophet,
God says that he can send deceivers as a test to the faithful.
And sending deceivers is lying.
God is stating that people who believe false prophets will be held
accountable for it.
Irrelevant. Again the issue is not justification but possibility.
Can God send false prophets? Apparently yes. Is this lying?
Yes it is.
Since God is so sovereign and completely in control,
the scriptures sometimes state that He does things that He merely lets
happen.
SENDING is more that just allowing to happen.
Likewise, in this case, the Hebrew scriptures are indicating that
He lets these false prophets believe and tell lies.
He SENDS them to do so. They are his agents. Their lies are his lies.
Gee, I wonder if this Salvation stuff is one of the lies? Could Paul
be a lying prophet? He certainly was a liar, by his own admission.
Ezekiel 20:25 Moreover I gave them statutes that were not good and
ordinances by which they could not live.
That's so that the Gospel could come later.
It's still lying.
* God didn't "give them statutes that weren't good." He "gave them up to
statutes that weren't good."
There's no words "up to" in there.
There is no evidence that God ever gave His
people evil statutes that would hurt them.
Codifying slavery doesn't hurt people?
Furthermore, the context of this
text indicates the Israelites' decision to choose other gods and God's
decision to let them go; for a time.
To worship the gods of the false prophets he had sent.
"Therefore I also gave them up to statutes that were not good, and judgments
by which they could not live; (NKJV)
"Moreover I gave them statutes that were not good and ordinances by
which they could not live. (NRSV)
2 Thessalonians 2:11 For this reason God sends them a powerful
delusion, leading them to believe what is false,
Deal with it!
I don't have to deal with it. It isn't true.
But it does portray God as a liar and deceiver, which is the issue
under discussion.
This verse is better understood by reading the verses before it and after
it. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 read, "The coming of the lawless one is
according to the working of Satan,
And who made Satan, and leaves him running loose?
with all power, signs, and lying wonders,
and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did
not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
And thus God is shown a liar.
Or rather the priests who present to us this malignant deity so
imagine him. Why should God demand belief without evidence, and
prevent belief after evidence is available? That sounds more like the
sort of threat a preacher would make in order to threaten those he
cannot lure.
Luke 8:49
In case, we learn about the nature of death, and more importantly,
of the nature of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
But it is God portrayed in the Bible as a liar.
Leave it to the unbeliever to get angry at God for raising the dead.
Pointing our the flaws in your Bible indicates that I am angry at God?
Hardly. But if I were God I wouldn't be very happy with the way I was
portrayed in the Bible.
In Luke 8:52, the word "sleep" can be used figuratively. It's the same
Greek word used in Ephesians 5:14. It reads, "Therefore He says: "Awake,
you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light."
Yes, sleeping is used figuratively to mean dead. But not in that
context. Not dead but sleeping? That's a denial of the figurative use.
You would profit from my book (http://skepticsannotatedbible.org). As you
can see, there are simple answers for your questions.
Simple? Simplistic is more like it. All I saw was desperate attempts
at rationalization that didn't cut it.
I was happy to correct your confusion on usenet, though.
It's a shame you couldn't. You came off sounding like Gleason Archer.

52 They were
all weeping and wailing for her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she
is not dead but sleeping." 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that
she was dead. 54But he took her by the hand and called out, "Child,
get up!" 55 Her spirit returned, and she got up at once.
So if her spirit returned, she was dead, and Jesus lied when he said
she was only sleeping.

Well, I had to think into it for quite a bit to see that from your point of
view it could seem incongruous. To a believer, that comment makes of course
perfect sense, even including the irony of the internal paradox.

Yeah, but to a believer the Atonement makes sense.
The rest of us find the whole idea completely illogical.

Hi everyone,
I'm happy to announce that Mike Gendron wrote the foreword for my workbook
that I'm writing. This workbook will accompany the CD-ROM e-book and will
have about 300 fill-in, short answer, and essay questions and the answers
will be in the back.
The workbook will be completed in a few days and will be printed, bound,
and
ready for shipping within a week or two. Here is Mike's foreword:
Foreword by Mike Gendron
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." Under divine inspiration,
the prophet Hosea wrote those words to encourage God's people to seek a
deeper understanding of Him through the Scriptures. The same exhortation
can
be applied today because the church is living in times of great deception.
When Christians do not have a solid foundation of biblical knowledge they
can easily be swept away by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men
and by craftiness in deceitful scheming (Eph. 4:14). Without a knowledge
of
the truth, there can be no discernment and without discernment, there can
be
no protection against deception.
If we are to know who God is, who we are and what God desires of us we
must
study the Bible. Only through the word of God can we know how to worship,
pray, witness, work, relate to others and live for God. The mark of a true
disciple of Jesus Christ is one who abides in His word. Only by abiding in
His word can we know the truth, and by knowing the truth we can be set
free
from the bondage of sin, deception and legalism.
Why should we study the Bible? It is the most authoritative, influential
and
powerful book ever written. God chose forty men to pen His word as they
were
carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21). The writers claim they
were
transmitting the very word of God, infallible and authoritative to the
highest degree. Since it is impossible for God to lie, His word must
become
the standard by which we discern truth from error (Hebrews 6:18; 1 John
4:6). God has exalted His Word above all things, even equal to His holy
name
(Psalm 138:2). His word is sufficient to function as the sole, infallible
rule of faith. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped
for
every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
God's word is sufficient...
to know the mystery of Christ - "that by revelation there was made known
to
me the mystery, as I wrote before in brief. And by referring to this, when
you read you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ."
Ephesians 3:3-4
to receive eternal life - "but these have been written that you may
believe
that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have
life in His name." John 20:31
to know you have eternal life - "These things I have written to you who
believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you
have eternal life." 1 John 5:13
to know church conduct - "I write so that you may know how one ought to
conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living
God, the pillar and support of the truth." 1 Timothy 3:15
to avoid sin - "I am writing these things to you that you may not sin. And
if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the
righteous." 1 John 2:1
to recognize commands - "If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual,
let
him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord's
commandment." 1 Corinthians 14:37
to avoid pride - "you might learn not to exceed what is written, in order
that no one of you might become arrogant in behalf of one against the
other." 1 Corinthians 4:6
to have joy - "And these things we write, so that our joy may be made
complete." 1 John 1:4
As you study the Scriptures "may the God of hope fill you with all joy and
peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy
Spirit (Rom. 15:13).

This sounds like an interesting product.
How many pages does it have, and is it monochrome, black and warm red or
cmyk, and what is the format? A4? What type of binding is it?
What is the weight of the paper and of the cover? Is it coated or offset
paper?
Maybe you could scan some pages and put them on free.christians.binaries as
a sample?
Best,

It will have about 75-100 pages. It will be 8 1/2 x 11 on white paper and
will likely have a number of my Israel pictures dispersed throughout.
I've had the printing donated. Color printing is included, but I'm not sure
about the weight of the paper. I'm getting a sample of the color printing,
so I'll know if I want to include pictures or not.
The binding will be plastic comb binding and the combs have already been
ordered. They are white and should arrive any day. I'm still contemplating
the cover, but may use see-through plastic.
God bless,

Try to use at least 70g/m2, if the printing is double sided, so that it
doesn't show through, and also so that the handwriting done on the workbook
won't show through on the other side.
Colour printing is a lot dearer than monochrome, if only because you are
making four offset plates per A2 area instead of one. In the case of photos
rather than sipmle diagrams two-tone doesn't add much to monochrome. The
cover should always be in colour, and on coated paper at least 120 g/m2.
Comb binding isn't a very professional finish and may pull down the value of
the product, but if you have pre-cut paper then that doesn't give you that
much choice. Gumming is quite a bit dearer, although it does look more
professional in the end.
It also packs neater.
