The Ten Commandments > a question |
I recently had a discussion with a friend about killing. He is a
devout Christian but like most has the need to rationalize one person
killing another. I asked him why the commandment on killing is the only
one that seems to be amended to allow killing in certain cases. I do
not recall "Thou shalt not steal" being amended in the Bible to say it
is OK to steal in some cases. I do not recall "Thou shalt have no other
God but me" being amended in the Bible to say that in some cases you
could have another God if needed. Are there amendments to all the
commandments or ONLY the one about killing? I asked my friend why the
word of God was not good enough and could he and the millions of others
not understand those four simple words, "Thou shalt NOT kill"?! I feel
like if God wanted killing to be OK with him he would have said
something like "Thou should not kill except in these cases." and he
could list the occasions that he felt killing another human was OK. so
this is my question > are there amendments to all the commandments or
just the one about KILLING? My arguements to my friend was that those
four words seem easy to understand and the intention seemed quite clear
Do NOT KILL ANYONE. So why can't God make himself understood. The Commandments seem succinct yet 'Man' appears to have a need to mold them, at least one, to fit his own needs. Comments?

Phyloe,
What Scriptural basis did your 'Christian' friend use to defend
killing?
It is true that during wartime, even the churches of Christendom
supported the war nations they lived in. But does that make it right?
Listen to what the leader of Christianity himself said:
Mt 5:44,
"But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute
you," (NASB)
Mt 7:12,
"Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for
this is the Law and the Prophets." (NKJV)
Jesus true followers really do obey him. That is what he expects. Thus
one claiming to be 'Christian' doesn't mean that they really are in
Jesus' eyes. Lu 6:46,
"Why do you call me, `Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" (NIV)
Sincerely, James

The Hebrew means specifically, "You shall not murder".
