The Ten Commandments
Series

The Ten Commandments -- there is nothing like it! What even comes close?
Here is an historic document over 3,000 years old. It is a code for living
more influential than any other. It confronts us today as an object of unceasing
and intense public debate. The Ten Commandments were given to the people of
Israel, yet they have been embraced by diverse cultures over long
centuries. The neglect of the Ten Commandments is seen by many as
contributing to a moral breakdown today. Others fight to keep them
out of public places. Can you think of any other ancient text that
so inspires such contemporary attention?
In this series you will find out why the Ten Commandments are so potent,
how they cut through the maze of psychobabble, how they get to the center of
issues of the heart and how they affect the way we live.
This series shows the Ten Commandments not as repressive do's and don'ts
but as a charter of liberty for a people released from servitude. It does
it in a way that uniquely communicates to people today through firsthand
contemporary experience. Hosted by composer, singer, communicator Adrian Snell,
these programs invite a broad audience to take a fresh look at the
Ten Commandments and personally reflect on the meaning of each one in their lives.
For a LIMITED time, this series will be available
from our Guest Area.

Here is an historic document over 3,000 years old. It is a
code for living more influential than any other. It confronts
us today as an object of unceasing and intense public debate.
The Ten Commandments were given to the people of Israel,
yet they have been embraced by diverse cultures over long
centuries. The neglect of the Ten Commandments is seen by
many as contributing to a moral breakdown today. Others
fight to keep them out of public places. Can you think of
any other ancient text that so inspires such contemporary
attention?
The Ten Commandments has so many flaws, that it is revealing that Christians
cannot find anything better in the Bible.
-------------------------------------
Let's examine those commandments from a realistic viewpoint. The first two
as given in the above site says:
1. You shall have no other gods before me.
2. You shall not make for yourself an idol.
That may have been good for temple priests who wanted the populace to
sacrifice to their god and no other. Christians have used those two
commandments to justify forcing their beliefs upon cultures and
civilizations that worshipped other gods.
The above site leaves out parts of the commandments. For example Exodus
20:5 is part of the second commandment. It says:
Exodus 20:5
You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I,
the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, who visits the
iniquity of fathers on children, even to the third and
fourth generations of those who hate me,
In other words, God punishes children for the sins of their fathers.
I prefer the 1st Amendment to the Constitution. It guarantees freedom of
religion.
-------------------------------
3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
It's not my god, so why should I be compelled to follow? Christians have
taken the names of numerous foreign gods and reduced them to demon status.
Why will they not grant non-Christians the right to point out the pettiness
and evil of the god they worship?
-------------------
4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Somehow Christians changed the "the Sabbath" to "Sunday", which shows how
easily the commandments can be twisted.
-----------------------
5. Honor your father and mother.
Generally, this is good advice, but we all know that there are numerous
cases in which it should not apply.
--------------------------
6. You shall not murder.
It is unfortunate that God himself is not bound by this commandment. Look
at the punishment he brought on to the Samarians:
Hosea 13:16
Samaria will be held guilty,
because she rebelled against her God.
They will fall by the sword,
their infants will be dashed to the ground,
their pregnant women will be ripped open.
---------------------------------
7. You shall not commit adultery.
Good advice, but in 2 Samuel 11 David commits adultery with Bathsheba, and
murders Bathsheba's husband. How does God punish David? You won't believe
it. In chapter 12 God punishes David by killing the child Bathsheba bore to
David. The infant is made to suffer for several days before it dies, yet
the Bible doesn't even give us its name.
------------------------------
8. You shall not steal.
More good advice. However, Christians should acknoledge that all religions
and ethic systems have rules against murder, stealing, telling falsehoods
etc. These rules do not make the Ten Commandments distinctive.
--------------------------------
9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
Everybody is supposed to hate liars, but in In Job 13:7 the Bible asks:
Will you speak wickedly on God's behalf?
Will you speak deceitfully for him?
Think about that. If you could save somebody's soul by telling a lie, would
you do it? You may be able to save the souls of thousands, just by telling
one little lie. Wouldn't you be selfish for not telling it? Whoever
created the above website is such a liar.
----------------------------
10. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your
neighbor.
Notice how somebody deceifully left off the first part of this commandment.
It should say,
Exodus 20:17
You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall
not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male slave, nor
his female slave, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor
anyththing that belongs to your neighbor's.
Oprah Winfrey once said that the only commandment she has never broken is
coveting her neighbor's wife.
