Object: There fell a great star from heaven
"The first angel sounded, and there followed hail
and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast
upon the earth, and the third part of trees was
burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.
|
And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great
mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea,
and the third part of the sea became blood, and the
third part of the creatures which were in the sea,
and had life, died, and the third part of the ships
were destroyed.
|
And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great
star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it
fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the
fountains of waters. And the name of the star is
called Wormwood, and the third part of the waters
became wormwood, and many men died of the waters,
because they were made bitter.
|
And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of
the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon,
and the third part of the stars, so as the third
part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for
a third part of it, and the night likewise"
(Revelation 8:7-12).

If one, who has studied the sciences, reads the Bible (a.k.a. God's
Word), he will notice a few differences between the two. Students of
the Bible correctly pointed this out to Copernicus, Darwin, Galileo and
others. Now days, almost all Bible scholars find no problems with some
of those differences (some call them "contradictions"). For
example, they have no problem when the teachings of Galileo and
Copernicus differ with "God's Word". But, a large number of
Fundamentalist Bible scholars treat the teachings of Darwin quite
differently. All three of the teachings differ with some views express
in "God's Word", but where Galileo's and Copernicus'
teachings are put on a pedestal, some Fundamentalist want to bury
Darwin's teachings deep under the pedestal.
Why is one "contradiction" worse than the others?
Well, I think it is that astronomy is about things around us. And
Fundamentalist no longer have a problem with that. But, Darwin talked
about us! He got personal! To make it worse, for many, the theory of
evolution is not well understood. In the eyes of some, Darwin's
theory of evolution only amounts to the difference between man and
monkey. And therefore, some, who feel offended, use the Bible to
protect their egos; in effect saying, "You who teach evolution are
not going to make a monkey out of me!"

Of course we all know from science what a star WILL BE called.
It is VERY obvious that no-one seems to know the meaning of "wormwood" or
even "worm" in ancient Hebrew (not even considering the bible.)
The ignorance prevalent from today's schools is sickening.

THAT IS JUST PLAIN IOGNORANT!
Even STUPID!
Unlike what you read in the Bible, the stars are not
little light in the sky, nor tiny objects that can fall
on Earth.
The planet Earth is a tiny speck compared to any star.
It could fall onto a star, but a star cannot fall on Earth.
Stop quoting banalities from the Bible and start thinking,

So you are just another run of the mill unbeliever! Your opinion is
just that, your opinion! I wonder how much the opinion of a minute
speck of dust is in a nonpersonal universe is worth! That is how much
time we should spend listening and reading your tripe!
If what you say is true, then why do you bother saying it? It is a
waste of your breath, and the time to type out your message. You say
"it" is all foolish, and you are part of "it"! You are a fool, wise in
your own conceit! A true Fool!
Now if what you say is false, and you say it yet, then you are still
playing the fool!
But if what I say is true, and you were to believe this, then you would
know that you are not just a speck of dust in the nonpersonal universe,

I offer you as evidence the entire book of Genesis
The Book of Exodus
and so on!
Mate these are EPICS preserved in the first instance through bardic
traditions and then written down in a composite form probably some eight
centuries before the Christian era.
They have more in common with the Illiad and the Odyssey than with divine
Inspiration. They preserve a minor degree of information about the past
but are predominantly examples of the slow development of ancient fictions
that provided unifying tribal myths.

And why do you reply to someone who posts a passage of scripture

Sad! Most THINKING ADULTS
(both labels obviously leave Lobotomy out)
understand that it is not proper or intelligent to attempt to impose
21st century thinking on people who lived 2,000 + years ago.
There was no attempt whatsoever to render the Nativity story
"scientifically accurate."
Do you make such demands of the tale of the Easter Bunny?
Do you truly try to dig down to the REALITY when you hear about the
statues on Easter Island?
You hold the Bible to a MUCH higher standard than any other work of
ancient times.
Why is that?
Never mind. I think I don't need to know.

Unlike what you read in the Bible, the stars are not
little light in the sky, nor tiny objects that can fall
on Earth.
The planet Earth is a tiny speck compared to any star.
It could fall onto a star, but a star cannot fall on Earth.

Stop quoting banalities from the Bible and start thinking,
but only if you dare.

FYI
The directions were about obeying secular or local, no, religious, laws.
Sort of like give unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.
If a Roman citizen, especially a soldier walked up to you and asked you to
carry something you were OBLIGED to carry it for one length. Jesus said to
not only obey that law but do twice what is OBLIGED
Same with the coat thing.
Same with a judge ordered slap in the face.
It was a ROMAN law. Jesus merely said to not only obey but, as followers go
the extra mile.

21s century the world!

tsk tsk. There is utterly nothing wrong with applying ancient wisdom to
today's issues. We do it with OTHER ancient philosophies; why not with
Judaism and Christianity?

Because they lack wisdom, because they are designed to enslave the minds
of others, because in no case of xianity, too much blood has been spilled
without justification as well as land stolen using the mythology as a
justification.

If a man demands that you carry his suitcase for a block, carry it for
two blocks.

Be my guest, but he wants me to carry his suitcase, there's going to be a
reason for it or I won't do it.

If a man demands your shirt, give him your coat, too. (then run home and
get one of the dozens of other shirts and coats you have hanging in your
closet)

I don't have dozens, and coats, I don't normally need them so I don't have
them. Anybody that actually needs anything I have, and I mean, actually.
And not simply wants, generally can have it.

If a man comes to your door and asks for a sandwich, bring him inside and
serve him a 5-course dinner with your family.

Around here, he gets whenever I happen to have on the table or in the
fridge. It doesn't matter if it's a neighborhood kid or a stranger that I
will never see again. In the case of strangers on the move, I generally
manage to send if you canned goods with them. In other words, unlike you,
my charity starts wherever I happen to be, and I do not expect more from
others than I'm willing to give. How many Christmas meals, did you order
this year from the local Roman Catholic church, one or two?

If you see a man with no shoes, give him a pair of yours. You have 10
pairs you never wear in your closet.

You don't know me very well, I have one pair of boots. They are for cold
or bad weather.

Don't criticize others; there's a lot in your life that God can criticize
as well.

Actually, there's not. There's very little that xians can actually
complain about, especially when it comes to personal conduct & ethics.
But these are foreign studies for you, and so you spout the Old Testament
when it supports your point of view, never realizing that in spite of the
claims made on behalf of your mythology, it is phony as you are.

Do unto the other person as you would wish he would do for you.

Not necessarily a good idea, especially when dealing with people like you.

Respect your elders.

Again, not necessarily a good idea, what if they are unworthy of respect.
They could be like you, never having earned respect. And yet being given
respect, because they are elders. Respect, is a thing that must be earned
with some people, a concept that will always elude you.

Take the time and the care to properly raise your children to do the
above.

I took my time to raise my children treat others with decency, help when
they could, in finish, what others started with them.

Take care of your old ones. They deserve it.

Not necessarily, you are a case in point.

I just can't see anything "stupid" or "dusty" about those quotes, and
they're right out of the Bible.

There also associated with societies that are durable. It's called
enlightened self interest and no god is required to point them out. Of
course, in your case, you need an invisible friend to tell you, how to be
a decent person, a self-imposed burden.

Perhaps you could explain your objections better.

Or perhaps, just perhaps, you can learn to get your head out of your *****
and learn that they books you worship, because they going to give you a
second life, you do not deserve you think, well, they're based on other
societies and other rules. You have yet to learn that they are not
unique, and in every instance there is a prior or parallel usage of the,
shall we say, good advice?

Perhaps you just don't like being told to modify your behavior. You
probably grew up in a foster home where no one cared.

Sometimes, I think I would have been better off. But that does not matter,
a father did the best he could to raise for children and provide decent
ethics for them to emulate. Perhaps, a foster home would've been better
for you, apparently it could be no worse if your conduct is indicative of
a xian upbringing.

Of course you, lying john w, will never stop doing that. -- L.

chuckle.
And you have just made me cry

Is this your first, middle, or last lie in this particular series?

drip drip < tears

Hell, you can even make your wine follow USENET protocol.
which wannabe this time Johnny? The one that pretends that the so-called
ethics and morals of the Hebrew grimorie are unique and can only be found
due to the influence of a god, a second rate god at that?
walksalone was not surprised that Johnny would think, assume actually,
that because something is in the grimorie, it must be god soaked and only
because god wanted it to be there. After all, he assumes everybody back
then was as stupid & self-centered as is he is now.

This extract from Revelation would make a great disaster movie, now that we
have digital editing. Of course the danger with modern film technology is
that the creators make the disaster sequences a bit too long - King Kong
was a recent example. Will the film have a happy ending where the baddies
get their just desserts? I look forward to the musical score. I hope they
bring the film out on DVD so that I can enjoy it in my own home.
