To Erik Evenson on a John 10:34 interpretation |
[Jn 10:34] Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I have said
you are gods'?
[Jn 10:34] Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye
are gods?
Erik I want to thank you for your curiosity regarding a very confusing verse
(John 10:34). This verse puzzled me enough so I had to go look at a few
commentaries (3 on my HPC).
Erik the above verse is a quote from the OT. To be exact Psa 82:6.
[Ps 82:6] "I said, 'You are "gods";
you are all sons of the Most High.'
"Jesus used Ps 82:6, where the Israelite judges are called gods (see also Ex
4:16; 7:1) to counter the Jews' charge of blasphemy" (LANTC).
Erik one must study "Rabbinic argumentation" in depth to understand why Jesus
argues the way he does here. But by no means should this verse be isolated
OUT OF CONTEXT of the manors and customs of the biblical culture to come to
a conclusion on what he said. Many people who have not taken biblical
backgrounds or at least studied Jewish culture and the culture of the bible
will misinterpret what Jesus had to say here and why he said it.
By no means is Jesus saying that we are gods. The Mormons take this verse
out of the biblical and historical context to conclude that christians can
become gods. Erik this not what Jesus is teaching here. For if it was there
would be more places in the bible that also teach it. But nowhere in scripture
does it teach that humans can become gods.
This is what my John Commentary had to say on this verse.
Quoted from the IVP New Testament Commentary series John
Is it not written in your Law, "I have said you are gods"? (v. 34). It is
unclear who is being referred to in Ps 82:6. Of the several proposals made
by scholars (cf. Beasley-Murray 1987:176-77), the most likely takes this as
a reference either to Israel's judges or to the people of Israel as they
receive the law. The latter is a common understanding among the rabbis (for
example, b. 'Aboda Zara 5a; Exodus Rabbah 32:7), but the former is also
represented in Jewish interpretation (Midras] Psalms; b. Sanhedrin 6b;
7a; b. Sot@a 47b). Jesus' explanation that these gods are those to whom
the word of God came (v. 35) might point to the Israelites receiving the
law. In this case the contrast between these gods and Jesus would be that
Jesus is the one who both fulfills the law and is greater than the law. But
this expression to whom the word of God came could also refer to the judges
(as suggested by the rest of Ps 82) who have received a commission from God
to exercise the divine prerogative of judgment on his behalf. The psalm is
actually a condemnation of the judges for not exercising their responsibility
faithfully, thus corresponding both to the condemnation of these Jewish leaders
in John and to Jesus as the true judge. To make his point Jesus uses an
argument from the lesser to the greater, a very common form of argument in
the ancient world, not least among the rabbis. He compares the people who
are called gods to himself, the Son of God. They merely received the word
of God, whereas he is the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and
sent into the world

If one has Faith as small as a mustard seed one can move mountains.
Sounds like godlike behavior to me.
To be One in the Spirit of God, one's Action and Purpose becomes
God's Action and Purpose. There is no distinction. God is one and
God is many. Think of the Church as a Macro-Organism. We in the
Church might not understand our minute actions in the Broad picture
but GOD has the control of the command center.
In the Spirit, your Actions are God's Actions.
THAT is how HOLY Scripture is written by GOD through the
hands of Men.
In the Spirit, One can hear and converse with any true church members in
your intimate native tongue even if other members are foreign. It's as if
the Tower
of Babel NEVER happend. To outsiders, the din is just a bunch of babbel.

John 1:6-9 There came a man who was sent from God;
his name was John. He came as a witness to testify
concerning that light, so that through him all men
might believe. He himself was not the light; he came
only as a witness to the light.
