EZEKIEL, THEN AND NOW

To not warn others

To read the Bible in one year, today Read: John 19-21

To Know:
³Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; whenever
you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.² (Ezek.
3:17)

The present crisis regarding our membership in the United Church of Christ
is the third major turning point in my thirty-seven years of ministry. In
1969 the name of Jesus infuriated many who worshipped at the Byfield Parish
Church. God was welcome. The mention of the Lord was tolerated, but Jesus
Christ had censured from the vocabulary of the Byfield Parish pulpit. Even
more distressing to the congregation was my unquestioning acceptance of the
infallibility of the Bible. For years it had been expected that preachers
would correct Holy Scripture. The sermons were based on the belief that the
men and women who wrote the Bible were just like us and we are not, after
all, infallible. Even Jesus was ranked somewhere between a good man and a
prophet. The people in the pews had long been comforted by being told that
Christıs claim to be the incarnate God was Paulıs invention, but not taught
by Jesus himself.

An Original in a World of Carbon Copies was my first sermon at the Byfield
Parish Church. The three sermon points affirmed that Jesus was born of a
virgin, lived a sinless life that he sacrificially substituted for sinners,
and that being alive again, he presently rules the world. These three points
proved to be so opposite to what people in the Byfield Parish Church
believed Christianity to be that as time went on my continuance as pastor
was more and more in question.

In 1962 Christ reissued his call to Ezekiel. I was his new Ezekiel. He said
to me, ³Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel;
whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from
me.² Warning others that their religion was false was unwelcome but I
understood that my own life was at stake. If the call that came to me was
also meant for the Byfield Parish Church, then we are not free to decide not
to warn those in the churches who are against Jesus Christ without putting
our own lives in peril.

Title: About NOT blowing off in Church 03 May 2006 05:18:50 AM
People who fart in church should have their arses sewn up. God didn't
give you a backside so that you could attack His home with your foul
aromas. If you feel the need to blow off during the service you should
go outside.
