Grand jury to hear church sex abuse allegations
6/24/2005, 1:03 a.m. CT
The Associated Press
AMITE, La. (AP) - The case of a church where at least nine members allegedly
abused children and animals will be taken up Friday by a grand jury.
Eight of the suspects have been booked on child rape charges carrying a
possible death penalty. They include pastor Louis Lamonica of Hosanna Church
in Ponchatoula, his wife and a former sheriff's deputy.
Authorities have said witnesses described the use of robes, pentagrams on
the church floor, sex with a dog and the sacrifice of cats. The alleged
victims, suspected to number up to two dozen, range from infants to young
teens and include children of those accused.
Investigators believe the abuse began in 1999 and continued until the church
closed in 2003. But it was not until a woman called from Ohio in April,
saying she had fled to protect her child, that police claim they had even an
inkling of what was happening.
About the same time, Lamonica, 45, walked into the sheriff's office in
neighboring Livingston Parish, sat down, and, according to investigators,
named names and gave detailed descriptions of church activities.
He was arrested, followed by eight others authorities described as central
members of the ring. All but one are being held without bond. The tipster,
Nicole Bernard, was arrested on rape charges along with her ex-husband.
Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards has said some of the defendants
told investigators they were attracted to the alleged ring by devil worship.
The church was once a bustling house of worship claiming up to 1,000
members. But by the time the alleged abuse began, membership had dwindled to
only a handful of people, authorities said.
