Tongues |
These signs shall follow them that believe; in my
name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak
with new tongues... Mark 16:17
They were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began
to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them
utterance. Acts 2:4
Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?
Acts 19:2

When Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy
Ghost came on them, and they spake with tongues...

To another divers kinds of tongues; to another the
interpretation of tongues; but all these worketh that
one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man
severally as he will. 1 Corinthians 12:10-11
God hath set some in the church, first apostles,
secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that
miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments,
diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all
prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of
miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? Do all speak
with tongues? Do all interpret? But covet earnestly
the best gifts... 1 Corinthians 12:28-30
---
In the church I had rather speak five words with my
understanding, that by my voice I might teach others
also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
1 Corinthians 14:19
I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather
that ye prophesied, for greater is he that prophesieth
than he that speaketh with tongues, except he

brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues,
what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you

Seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue

Quench not the Spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:19
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together,
every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a
tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let
all things be done unto edifying. If any man speak in
an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by

Here is an interesting list I found that breaks down the differences
between tongues in Paul's day (first century) vs. tongues today:
First century - Spoke a known language (Acts 2:8)
Today - Today don't even claim to use known languages.
First century - Were understood. (Acts 2:6; 1 Cor 14:19)
Today - Don't claim to understand today.
First century - Were edified. (1 Cor. 14:26)
Today - No such claim today.
First century - Confirmed the word.
(Acts 10:46; Hebrew 2:3-4)
Today - Today, they don't even accept confirmed
word today. Add to and deny it.
First century - Spoke by turn (1 Cor. 14:27)
Today - All speak together today in mass confusion
First century - No interpreter? - Silence
(1 Cor 14:28)
Today - Don't want to be interpreted today
First century - Sign to unbelievers (1 Cor. 14-22)
Today - Used today for excitement
First century - For used of edifying (1 Cor 14:26)
Today - Show, entertain.
First century - Spirit subject to speaker.
(1 Cor. 14:26-31)
Today - Today, "Don't stop me, I'm getting a revelation!"
First century - Spoke to profit the church (1 Cor 14:6)
Today - No profit today.
First century - Prayed for interpretation
(1 Cor. 14:13)
Today - pray for tongue speaking
First century - Spoke to instruct (1 Cor. 14:13)
Today - Revel in confusion, no instruction.
First century - Believed Gospel. (Mark 16:16)
Today - Deny gospel because getting a new revelation!
First century - Spoke to benefit hearers. (1 Cor. 14:9)
Today - Not so today. Benefit in glory of speaker.
First century - Interpret so unlearned understand.
(1 Cor. 14:16)
Today - Interpretation not done today.
First century - No accusation of madness
(1 Cor. 14:23)
Today - Today, confusion is rampant.
First century - No confusion allowed (1 Cor. 14:33)
Today - All in confusion.
First century - Women kept silence (1 Cor. 14:34)
Today - All speak today. In regulating usage of gifts,
women had not abilities.
First century - Holy Spirit baptism audible. No mistake
in knowing HS campe upon them. (Acts 2:2)
Today - None will say so today.
First century - Holy Spirit baptism visible. Not mistaken
in seeing. (Acts 2:3)

Actually, I make this claim and so do most who speak in tongues today.
Most pentecostals when asked why no recognizable languages appear to
be spoken in their services seem to tell us that they are speaking
"angelic" languages that nobody can understand.
Which language have you spoken in tongues, and what was the
nationality of the interpreter?
First century - Were understood. (Acts 2:6; 1 Cor 14:19)
Today - Don't claim to understand today.
In you read I Cor 14 you will see that a person who speaks in tongues,
speaks to God, not man.
1 Cor 14:1-5
Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may
prophesy. 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to
God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks
mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation
and comfort to men. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but
he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I wish you all spoke with
tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is
greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets,
that the church may receive edification
NKJV
As you can see that is ONLY true if no man can understand him.
Paul also said:
1 Cor 14:10-17
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and
none of them is without signification.
11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto
him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a
barbarian unto me.
12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek
that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he
may interpret.
14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my
understanding is unfruitful.
15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with
the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing
with the understanding also.
16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that
occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks,
seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
KJV
So IF you speak in a tongue and nobody understands you, then you are
like a BARBARIAN to the hearer and they are like a BARBARIAN to you.
And if there is no understanding, speaking in tongues is UNFRUITFUL to
you; your mind is not engaged.
I pray in ENGLISH (which IS a language, btw), and my mind understands
and my spirit prays. No mindless babbling (which the modern-day
pentecostals refer to as "tongues") is involved. My prayers are heard
just as much by God as yours.
First century - Were edified. (1 Cor. 14:26)
Today - No such claim today.
I make the claim and so does the Bible.
If nobody understands (not even you) you may "feel good," but you are
not "built up," (that is what the word means, "built up."). YOU are
not participating in anything said; the speaker of the "tongues" is a
BARBARIAN to you, as Paul said in 1 Corinthians 14:11.
Tongues in Acts 2 were KNOWN, RECOGNIZED, UNDERSTOOD HUMAN LANGUAGES,
not gibberish as is the common "pentecostal" practice today.
First century - Confirmed the word.
(Acts 10:46; Hebrew 2:3-4)
Today - Today, they don't even accept confirmed
word today. Add to and deny it.
False accusation.
If nobody can understand, how can you "confirm" anything is said at
all?
Heb 2:3-4
3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the
first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by
them that heard him;
4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with
divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own
will?
KJV
No evidence is given that the mindless babblings of the "pentecostals"
IS from God, IS any kind of "miracle, IS tongues at all. Nothing but
babbling.
In Acts 2, people heard IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGES and confirmed what was
being said.
In Acts 14 you are told to either BE UNDERSTOOD or keep quiet.
1 Cor 14:28
28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and
let him speak to himself and to God.
NKJV
First century - Spoke by turn (1 Cor. 14:27)
Today - All speak together today in mass confusion
Not true.
In a great many "pentecostal" churches, they do exactly that. Some do
not.
First century - No interpreter? - Silence
(1 Cor 14:28)
Today - Don't want to be interpreted today
Not true, false accusation. Come visit my church sometime.
I have visited many "pentecostal" churches in which no interpretation
was done at all. But the babblers did not shut up.
First century - Sign to unbelievers (1 Cor. 14-22)
Today - Used today for excitement
False accusation.
Perhaps a little. But not done as a sign to unbelievers. Unbelievers
are not (as they were in Acts 2) mystified how people could be
speaking in real human languages they had never been taught.
Unbelievers today think "pentecostals" are emotional NUTS, mindlessly
babbling, speaking gibberish, and pretending they are speaking in
"tongues." Most unbelievers think "pentecostals" are just plain
stupid.
First century - For used of edifying (1 Cor 14:26)
Today - Show, entertain.
False accusation.
Perhaps, but only in part.
First century - Spirit subject to speaker.
(1 Cor. 14:26-31)
Today - Today, "Don't stop me, I'm getting a revelation!"
False accusation.
Not always. Sometimes.
First century - Spoke to profit the church (1 Cor 14:6)
Today - No profit today.
False accusation.
What "profit" is it to be as a BARBARIAN to the church? In the many
"pentecostal" churches I have visited over the years I saw about as
many "uninterpreted tongues" as those that had people "interpret"
them. Of the times they were "interpreted," if you paid attention to
the inflections, the syntax and form and the length of the English
"interpretations" you could plainly see that what the "interpreter"
said didn't match the inflections etc. of the "tongues" speaker and
were not translating anything real at all.
How does THAT "profit" a church?
First century - Prayed for interpretation
(1 Cor. 14:13)
Today - pray for tongue speaking
False accusation.
I've never seen one "pentecostal" pray to be an interpreter.
First century - Spoke to instruct (1 Cor. 14:13)
Today - Revel in confusion, no instruction.
False accusation.
You claim so anyway. The only "instruction" I saw was from people who
"interpreted" with different form and inflection and amounts of time
from what was originally babbled by the "tongues" speaker.
First century - Believed Gospel. (Mark 16:16)
Today - Deny gospel because getting a new revelation!
False accusation.
How about YOU telling us what the GOSPEL of Jesus Christ is, and we'll
see. . .
First century - Spoke to benefit hearers. (1 Cor. 14:9)
Today - Not so today. Benefit in glory of speaker.
False accusation.
First century - Interpret so unlearned understand.
(1 Cor. 14:16)
Today - Interpretation not done today.
False accusation.
First century - No accusation of madness
(1 Cor. 14:23)
Today - Today, confusion is rampant.
False accusation.
Non-pentecostals think you are nuts. You are considered to be stupid,
confused, and infantile by unbelievers. They do NOT consider what you
do to be either a miracle or from God.
First century - No confusion allowed (1 Cor. 14:33)
Today - All in confusion.
False accusation.
First century - Women kept silence (1 Cor. 14:34)
Today - All speak today. In regulating usage of gifts,
women had not abilities.
False accusation.
First century - Holy Spirit baptism audible. No mistake
in knowing HS campe upon them. (Acts 2:2)
Today - None will say so today.
Only happened once, but Jesus has continued to baptize in the HS with the
evidence of speaking in tongues.
He has also continued to baptize with the Holy Spirit WITHOUT ANY SUCH
"EVIDENCE," since "with the evidence of speaking in tongues" is a
manmade doctrine, not commanded, not expected, not promised anywhere
in the Bible.
First century - Holy Spirit baptism visible. Not mistaken
in seeing. (Acts 2:3)

First century - Holy Spirit baptism heard. No mistake
in hearing. (Acts 2:4)
Today - Not so today.
False accusation.
Non-believers hear you and think you are nuts, babbling mindlessly.
No recognized human languages with very few exceptions. Absolutely
true statement.
Hmm. So far neither James nor anyone else seems to want to try to
refute you.
Good post! Valid points!
Read The Bible quoted scripture and was correct. Badbeat (go figure on that
name) accused the body of Christ and tried to discredit both the church and
the Holy Spirit. His is was nothing but false accusations, lies and
doctrines of devils,
You may call him names and falsely accuse him if you wish. A couple
of his claims were not accurate, but most were, as I have demonstrated
clearly.

There were two types of tongues. The one, of men of other tongues, that
is that they were able to speak in other mens languages of the gospel
of Christ; and the othet in the split tongues like as of fire, of
Angels.

Yeah, it's known as "spirit possession".
Possession is nine tenths of the Law.

I have witnessed some evangelists doing the glossolalia thing.
Their followers call it "speaking in tongues". When they see
the evangelist go into a tirade of glossolalia they recact as
though they were beholding something miraculous happening.
I have not found anything in the Bible that describes "speaking
in tongues" in a way that one might describe glossolalia. So,
how is anyone supposed to be able to "dig" glossolalia?
I have heard that the techniques for doing the glossolalia thing
are taught in some evangelist training centers and that almost
anyone can learn to do it. If what I have heard is true, then why
is doing the glossolalia thing such a big deal?

What you have heard may or may not be true---but even if it were true, it
does not mean ALL persons who believe that speaking in tongues and practice
it, 'learned' it in a training center or such. I certainly did not nor have
ever heard of such a 'training center'.
If you are a Christian and study the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, and desire
the baptism in the Holy Spirit, God will give you the baptism. And it is
almost always accompanied by the gift of being able to praise and pray to
God in an unknown tongue.

Bo, I don't want to discourage you because I'm sure you're a God fearing
Christian and I understand that you believe this with all your heart based
on your personal experience. I too was a tongue talking miracle working
holy ghost filled person - until I saw the error my ways.

God bless.

You know NOTHING of what you speak. I've never been in a trance.
You may have not ever been in a trance, but you were certainly
responding to the power of suggestion, if you believe you have spoken
in tongues.
Compare your experience to that of Acts 2, in which KNOWN languages
were spoken.
Have you heard the sound of the mighty, rushing wind when you "spoke
in tongues"?
Have you experienced the "tongues of fire"?
You have not.
Meaning what you experienced was purely emotional

you have obviously never read.
I suggest you 'KNOW' that early man was superstitious,
I am aware of that, yet the Bible contains both references to
superstitions and to science.
I bet YOU never bothered to read it and look for the science, did you?
Did you know, hundred of years before Jesus was born, we find
multi-story dwellings, and--- INDOOR PLUMBING?
I bet YOU didn't know that!
Were you aware that we have an aqueduct in the Middle East that stands
today, the references to its being built are in the Old Testament?
Bet you didn't know THAT!
And if they knew how to build WORKING AQUEDUCTS 500 BC, they were not
"ignorant savages!"
loved mythology,
True. As do you!
Or didn't you read "Green Eggs and Ham" when you were a child?
Or did you think that Green Eggs and Ham was non-fiction?
needed stories for entertainment
So, what you are saying is that you don't watch CSI, or CSI New York,
or CSI Miami, or Numb3rs.
I don't believe you!
And the DELIVERY systems may have been different then, but I'm sure
they knew the difference between Jonah and the Whale, and "Peter and
the Wolf".

Well, that is the opinion of SOME.
There are many others, however -- MANY others-- who believe, as I do,
that MUCH of the New Testament was written by the participants.
other than that these stories were written by early

You're calling 1st Century civilization "early man?"
smirk.
You don't see the science in the Bible?
You fail to understand Jesus' references to the digestive system?
You fail to understand the Old Testament references to "lineage", and
to "spilling seed on the ground" so that the young man would not give
the young woman children?
They actually understood REPRODUCTION 500 BC!

The height of religious bigotry and stupidity is to write off a book
you have obviously never read.
Nothing obvious, the more it is read with an open mind the more it becomes
obvious it is full of fables. In my day we had 'divinity' periods at college
three times a week, so I read plenty from that old book full of glaring
inconsistencies
I suggest you 'KNOW' that early man was superstitious,
I am aware of that, yet the Bible contains both references to
superstitions and to science.
I bet YOU never bothered to read it and look for the science, did you?
It was my best subject and the bible never entered into things. Care to give an
example of science from the bible, but please do not include any of these:
The universe revolves around the earth.
Stars are pinpricks in the heavens.
The world is flat (and on pillars)
Bats are a kind of bird.
Rabbits chew their cud.
There is enough water to flood the entire planet
Women were created from a man's rib
Rainbows are a promise from God
[Acknowledgments to 'James, Seattle']
Did you know, hundred of years before Jesus was born, we find
multi-story dwellings, and--- INDOOR PLUMBING?
I bet YOU didn't know that!
Clever folks those Romans, they had baths too with hot and cold water, what is
that supposed to prove, there was a god?
Were you aware that we have an aqueduct in the Middle East that stands
today, the references to its being built are in the Old Testament
Bet you didn't know THAT!
And if they knew how to build WORKING AQUEDUCTS 500 BC, they were not
"ignorant savages!"
I said nothing about them being ignorant savages, I refered to scripture writers
as early superstitious folks which is exactly what they were. They also had a
job to do, get more recruits into their temple and keep them there, so there were
no boundries that they would not cross, tongue in cheek an all.
loved mythology,
True. As do you!

So, what you are saying is that you don't watch CSI, or CSI New York,

Sometimes I watch TV, back then they had nothing like that, only wandering story
tellers who's job it was to 'astound' those gathered in the town center of a
night, with weird stories of early magic, or if you like, religion, with chaps
like the one they called Jesus who lived a hundred years before. I bet their
mouths were agape when they were told the one about Him feeding a multitude with
only five loaves and five fishes, or was it 'three' ? I can't remember, I never
found the bible very memorable, rather more frustrating and silly
I don't believe you!

To 'know for certain' is humanly impossible about anything that happened two
thousand or more years ago.

that MUCH of the New Testament was written by the participants.

smirk.
You don't see the science in the Bible?
You fail to understand Jesus' references to the digestive system?
I fail to know what He was doing from the cradle to age around twenty which is
much more to the point, as it points to the strong possibility the whole story
was made up a couple of generations later, after the so called 'FACT'
You fail to understand the Old Testament references to "lineage", and
to "spilling seed on the ground" so that the young man would not give
the young woman children?
They actually understood REPRODUCTION 500 BC!
WOW, you don't copulate therefore there's no offspring. Did that take a genius
to work out?
Any farmer of the time knew that if he had no rams in his flock of sheep there
would be no lambs; you bloody fool.

NO and neither have you, other than in your befuddled mind.
Have a good week and try not to smirk too much; I'm sure it does not suit you.

In the Bible, it is said that in the last days "there will be NO
miracles"
It's about time man wised up and stopped believing in "fairytales"
and superstitious nonsense. Even the Bible prophecies indicate
such.
"Prophecy is 99 percent forsight, and 1 percent prediction."
You can quote me on that if you like, as it's an original statement.
