Traditional values of honesty |
Traditional values of honesty
When John Major was Prime Minister he launched his 'Back to Basics'
Campaign. It was a call to return to the traditional values of honesty,
integrity and respect for one another and society. This was pilloried in the
press and destroyed by a media exposure of 'Tory Sleaze' as major government
figures were publicly disgraced.
Morality is back on the political agenda but this time it is being
associated with Christian values. Michael Howard, the Leader of the
Conservative Party has called for the upper time limit of abortion to be
reduced from 24 to 20 weeks. The leader of the Roman Catholics in England
and Wales, the Methodist Church and the Archbishop of Canterbury all
applauded this move. A parliamentary committee has called for a review of
the abortion laws. There seems to be growing support for a reduction in the
upper age limit as new 3D scanning technology shows the reality of human
life in the womb, something pro-life campaigners have been calling attention
to for decades.
But the danger is that under the current circumstances any review of the
abortion law is likely to include an attempt to make abortion available on
demand up until 20 weeks gestation. There will also be an attempt to lift
certain restrictions on what can be legally done with human embryos and
genetic experimentation.
What is needed now is a return to the foundational values that undergird,
educate and inform decision making in all moral issues. These are the basic
values of the sanctity of life, the sanctity of marriage and the family,
care for the poor and marginalised and the protection of the weak and
vulnerable. That's why abortion is such a 'litmus test' of the moral
condition of the nation.
The attitude of a society to the most vulnerable human life of all - that of
a child in his or her mother's womb is a reflection of the moral weakness or
strength of that society.
As Christians, we cannot ignore these things and hide ourselves behind the
walls of church buildings.
It is time to make the cross count - to put your mark on the ballot paper
and vote against liberal and anti-Christian morality in the nation. Our
politicians are beginning to take note of the Church and the millions of
others who never attend church services but who want to see Christian values
restored.
