Object: Translation Work and the Lord's Peace
In a seminary class I was in last year with a missions professor who
had spent his early career years in the mission field. One day he
mentioned that there was a time in years past when, in most missions
settings, it was just implicitly assumed in that those they were
working with were all walking with God in such a state of intimacy that
He would minister His "peace" to them as they faced difficult
decisions.
In regards to a particular matter they would be told to seek God's face
concerning the matter and then gather together again to discuss how the
Lord had revealed His guidance to each as they sought Him.
This profesor implied that in this day most decisions in a mission or
other ministry settings are made on the basis of strictly
rational/pragmatic considerations.
Relating this to Scripture translation, it is interesting to note that
the NIV translation team had an open lesbian on it. Though the NIV
folks are very quick to point out that she was merely a stylist.
The question posed is: How can a group that is engaged in a task as
important as Scripture translation seek the Lord's direction for their
work with one among them who is engaged in a lesbian life? (or
adultery, embezzlement or any other significant sin)
Is it significant that a group engaged in Scripture translation is not
thus able to be "one?"
Can one who is abiding in a significant sin also walk in intimacy with
God suficiently to receive His peace and guidance in any regard other
than the central need to remove the sin from their life?
Perhaps this is why the NIV seems watery, thin.
Any thoughts?
