FAITHFULLY READING GOD'S WORD
True Christianity stands only by shed blood
To Read: Ezra 1-3
To Know:
"Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer, and put fire
in it, and laid incense on it, and offered unholy fire before the Lord,
such as he had not commanded them. And fire came forth from the presence of
the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord." (Lev. 10:1,2)
What did Nadab and Abihu really do? Were these the only two priests ever to
do what was not divinely sanctioned? This passage is sobering. Every
follower of Jesus Christ is a priest of God. The kingdom of God is
populated entirely by priests. God said to Israel of old, ".you shall be to
me a kingdom of priests." (Ex. 19:6) John applies Moses' words directly to
us. He writes, ".To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his
blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father." (Rev. 1:5,6)
Peter puts it like this, "Come to him, to that living stone, rejected by
men but in God's sight chosen and precious; and like living stones be
yourselves built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood."(1 Pet.
2:4,5) Has no one else ever offered to God what he did not order? Of course
they have.
Nadab and Abihu were inventing their own religion. Cain did the same when
he brought his groceries to God instead of a blood sacrifice. True religion
is rooted in this, "Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness
of sin." (Heb.9: 22) Nadab and Abihu were appointed priest when the Lord
was formally establishing the priesthood. Their death was meant to be a
lesson for all of us who follow that God counts the violation of his
revealed will as worthy of the death penalty.
To Do:
There are many theologies that present themselves as Christian that
eliminate the need to believe in the shed blood of Jesus Christ. The
rejection of the blood of Christ is the basis of theological liberalism.
Nadab and Abihu are a warning against all who willingly reject the way of
God's salvation.
To Ask:
Father, teach me your truth that I may not mislead a needy world.

Yes. That's why it's known as a blood and death cult.

If we affirm that god does not exist, perhaps only then can we begin to
recognize fully that human beings are autonomous and that we are responsible
for our own destinies and those of our fellow human beings. Perhaps only
then can we summon the courage and wisdom to develop a rational ethics based
on realistic appraisal of nature and an awareness of the common moral
decencies.
