likes of him... so he had to stay inside his own family to find a

There are some slight difficulties with old man joe's assertions. In
no particular order, Darwin (in his autobiography) described himself
as an agnostic; if he was, as OMJ said, "proud to be an atheist," he
was not proud enough to publicly admit it, even in documents never
published during his lifetime (he specifically noted that the human
brain was probably not adequate to work out the truth about God). Of
course, Darwin was apparently an Anglican Christian at the time he
married; his faith declined gradually over time (as he tells it), in
part because of the death of his favorite daughter. Also, marriages
among first cousins were not uncommon among the British (and other
European) upper classes in the early 19th century; it seems odd to
assert that Darwin needed some special motive to do what so many other
members of his class did.
I guess he didn't understand the concept of why God

Leviticus contains no prohibition of cousin marriage, of course, nor
can I recall any prohibition or criticism of the practice elsewhere in
scripture. Neither did the laws of England at the time. Darwin
himself did wonder whether marriages between cousins constituted the
sort of inbreeding that led to a greater risk of birth defects (a
couple of his own children died young), and recommended that the
British government study the question.
In point of fact, the levitical prohibitions regarding marriage don't
make a lot of sense if you assume their primary purpose was to prevent
inbreeding: why the prohibition (under most circumstances) against
marrying one's brother's widow? Why was there a rule against nephews
marrying their aunts, but no prohibition against uncles marrying their
nieces? The rules make more sense viewed as an attempt to reduce male
competition over women within patrilineal clans than as attempts to
keep near kin from producing offspring.

About half the states in the United States make cousin marriage
legal. Only Kentucky treats such marriages as incestuous, which means
that only Kentucky refuses to recognize such marriages when they were
contracted in a state where cousins are allowed to marry. And, again,
in the society in which Darwin lived (like the society set up by the
laws of Moses), such marriages were entirely legal and not
incestuous.

No, not really. Evolutionary theory does not rest on the authority
(scientific, moral, or otherwise) of Charles Darwin, nor are his
opinions or writing thought by evolutionists to be inerrant. When we
ask you to accept evolutionary theory, we are not asking you to
believe Charles Darwin; we are asking you to draw reasonable
inferences from the evidence. Of course, it would be nice if you
judged Darwin by the same standards you judge creationists of the era,
and try to avoid purely delusional assaults on his character, but his
character ultimately is not the issue here.

Of course, most others who ventured an opinion thought it an extremely
good match, albeit better for Charles than for Emma (the Wedgwoods had
more money than the Darwins, what with that pottery business and
all). And, as noted, Darwin did care, and asked the British
government to study the question of whether cousin marriage should
continue to be allowed.

The "genetic code" is the correspondence between three-nucleotide DNA
codons and amino acids. It is, if you will, the "alphabet" in which
the genome is "written;" the "genome" is the complete set of genes and
noncoding DNA in an organism. Out of idle curiosity, why should we
trust your assertions about genetics when you are so confused about
the rudimentary facts of the subject? And natural selection tends to
weed out defects in the genome over time. And, again, you seem to be
very confused over the exact biblical prohibitions against marrying
near kin; they neither forbid cousin marriage nor are they (viewed as
attempts to prevent inbreeding) consistent (viewed as attempts to keep
relationships within the tribe peaceful, of course, they make rather
more sense).
Note that inbreeding does not cause genetic defects. Rather, it
increases the odds that one's children will inherit two copies of a
deleterious gene. Of course, if you don't marry near kin, your only
other choice is to marry distant kin (since all humans are related),
and sooner or later two copies of that deleterious recessive are going
to come together (and then get weeded out as the child dies without
having children of his own). Inbreeding just speeds up the process.
