And in a way, he might be right. As the stigma attached to being gay
eases, as equal opportunity for gay citizens becomes a reality, fewer
gay people will hide in the closet in order to get by. It probably will
*look* like there are more gays, but we will merely be seeing more of
the gays who were here all along.
When a gay teacher at my school (who does not know I know she is gay)
brings her girlfriend to the end of the year party, I'll know we've made
another step forward as a free society. I hate seeing friends, good
people, live in fear for their jobs, their families, and their safety.

He's either bisexual or retarded, maybe both.
It would be easy for a bisexual -- actively fighting if not repressing
their sexual attraction towards men -- to determine that homosexuality
is a choice.
The only thing worse is the people who define homosexuality
completely in terms of actions. That way they can even acknowledge
their same-gender attractions but, so long as they don't act on them,
they can pretend they're not gay or bi.

I understand you. But when more currently gay people stop hiding, and
it *looks* like there are more gay people, people like your friend will
claim that gay marriage caused an increase in the number of gay people.
They will be wrong, of course, but because a simple minded glance at the
numbers will confirm their preconceived notions, they will never look
deeper.
