Satan said they would be like Gods and their eyes would be opened. The Bible says that is
what happened.

He is NOT defending us, he is (at his very first contact with us) using
his
scheming ways to tempt Eve into disobeying God - in fact the words "Ye
shall
not surely die" are the very first lie!
Not true. The first lie was when God said they would die the day they ate.
Satan said they
would not and the Bible confirms that God lied.
Satan said they would be like Gods and their eyes would be opened. The
Bible says that is
what happened.
So we see that God did not want us to have free will but Satan was willing
to sacrifice himself
so that we could have free will.

Satan, one of the senior but minor gods of the Christian mythology first
appears in history, as a concept with a name and as an eternal opponent, in
the mythology from Babylon known as Zorastorism. The entomology of the
word is uncertain but it appears to be, when spelled as satan, strictly a
Hebrew word. It appears in the Hebrew Bible as a noun five times and as a
title four times. When used as a noun it is applied to humans and means
adversary. When used with a political or military background, adversary is
the correct rendition, but it can be used as accuser when used in a legal
context. When used as a title, it means a celestial being. When referring
to a celestial being, there is only one context where it is a proper name,
in the other three context's it is a noun meaning adversary or accuser.
The term Satan is a first associated with the term devil in the Greek bible
known as the 70 or L.X X, where it means the slanderer. In the Christian
new testament he acquires the names of the evil one as well as of the
tempter. The first encounter of Satan as a divine being is in the numbers
22:22 -- 35 where Balaam, an alien seer, sets out only journey, which
really irritates Yahweh. It irritates Yahweh so much that he dispatches a
celestial messenger, the mal'ak yhwh, described as a satan. This satan
places himself on the road upon which Balaam is traveling, and of course
Balaam is totally unaware of this sword bearing messenger. But his donkey
notices and twice avoids the messenger. Naturally this irritates Balaam
and he beats the animal. The messenger then goes to a spot where he cannot
be bypassed, and the donkey lays down. Of course, it is beaten again. At
this point, Yahweh permits the donkey to speak and she asked why Balaam has
beaten her. This conversation is continued in the xian bible. In this
particular passage is dated to around the - sixth century Gregorian, or
even later. Previously it was assumed to be from the J. source. That
would have made the earliest possible association with the noun satan being
applied to a celestial being. As is apparent, this particular satan was
simply a messenger of the Yahweh and not his enemy. As in the office of
the satan, he is acting in the accordance with Yahweh's will instead of
opposing it.
In the next encounter Satan in the book of Job, there is a gathering of the
divine council. Present is a being called ´has satan¡: which is the common
noun satan, preceded by a definitive article. The definitive article makes
it virtually certain that this is not a proper name, rather it is a title
which indicates a specific role or office. The oddity there is that
neither the legal system of ancient Israel or the divine councils of the
surrounding kingdoms included anyone whose specific job was to be an
accuser. There is an argument that professional informer/accuser's existed
in Persian society, and that the satan of Job is modeled after them. The
evidence however is inconclusive. What is apparent however is satan is
clearly a divine being even though satan is not a proper name. He is still
subject to the power of the Yahweh, like the messenger sent to Balaam. He
is not independent nor a force of himself. There is a serious
consideration that the book of Job is in fact a copy over of an earlier
work. Other scholars see it as a response to the theological problems
encountered by the Babylonian exile and the exposure of Jewish theology to
Babylonian theology. This aspect of satan is continued throughout the Old
Testament and every case of satan being used as a name or indicator of a
divine being places him in subjugation to Yahweh.
The aspect of the character of satan as a demonic fallen angel is not in
concurrence with Jewish theology but it is strictly of a Christian
interpolation. This is possibly based on the passage of 2 Chronicles
10:15 & 18:18 -- 22 where David has his head messed with and is required to
census all of Israel and Judah. The current thinking is that this is
simply a way all avoiding demonstrating that Yahweh has lied and committed
and evil act. During the second temple., the use of Satan is limited and
is found in the book of jubilees as well as three Enoch. In the 70, Sirach
21:27 indicates when a person curses satan, he curses his own life. It is
by way of puesographia & legend we find Satan as an active evil divine.
As many have been told in many a church of the xian myth, satan was present
at the fall of Adam, yet patently, this is impossible if in fact he was not
acting under the orders and guidance of El, who was the senior Proto Jewish
god at the moment.
The serpent is found as a symbol of wisdom throughout the entire world. It
is also found as a symbol all the connection of life to the underworld.
Many of the ancients beliefs had the underworld as a source of life and a
place where life returned when it was done. It is through the connection
with the underworld where the serpent was presumed to acquire its knowledge
and become an intermediary between the gods and humans.
Not all gods were sky gods and the underworld played a large part in the
beliefs of the ancient Middle East.
The standard xian drill has Satan as an independent agency working strictly
against their gods. The Jewish theology prior to the *exile* does not
concur in this.
