Hi, I am looking to purchase a Bible and am thinking of getting either
the New American Bible or the Saint Joseph New American Bible. I was
wondering what the differences are between the two. Also, I was
thinking about getting one that was published after 1991, since it
would be more current. Would one of these be the preferred Bible, btw?
I am a Roman Catholic and read the Bible during my high school years
because it was required, but now, years later, I would like to start
reading it on a regular basis. At first I was considering getting the
NAB or the Douay-Rheims, but I noticed that the Vatican website uses
the NAB. Then I noticed that there are two different NAB's, the SJ and
the non-SJ. I also noticed that the NAB has been edited several times
and I think the last revision was in 1991. I am kind of confused about
which Bible to get, but think that the NAB or the SJNAB might be my
best choices. Now I would like to know which would be the best of the
two. Thanks for any help.

Here is one test for accuracy you can preform on whichever Bible you
decide upon, to see if the translators are doing their job.
Please open your Bible to Mt 7:7. Here is how the NAB shows it:
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and
the door will be opened to you."
But did they accurately consider the verb forms? In the NT, the Greek
verb tenses express not only the TIME of an action or state, but also
the KIND of action, whether momentary, starting out, continuing,
repetitious, or completed. Attention to such coloring of the Greek verb
forms leads to a precise translation with the full force of the action
being described, and represents what the original writer penned.
The verb form at Matthew 7:7 is of the 'continuing' type, not just a
one time thing. But the above translation (and many others) only show
it to be a one time thing. So here is what Matthew actually wrote there
when the correct verb forms are used. Matthew 7:7,
Matthew 7:7, "Keep on asking, and it will be given YOU; keep on
seeking, and YOU will find; keep on knocking, and it will be opened to
YOU." (NWT)
The continual asking, and seeking, and knocking, is a main part of the
thought from that verse because of the verb form used there in the
original. And so should be evident there as well in the translation.
I hope in your search for a Bible you take into consideration the above
material. But if accuracy is not paramount, then at least continue to
read whatever Bible(s) you have available, since most of them do relate
the general information that God wants His servants to know. (2 Ti
3:16)
