THE BIBLICAL WITNESS
What not knowing means
To Read: Proverbs 10-12
To Know:
"Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, 'Today, when you hear his voice, do not
harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the
wilderness, where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty
years. Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, 'They always
go astray in their hearts; they have not known my ways.' As I swore in my
wrath, 'They shall never enter my rest.'" (Heb. 3:7-11)
Haddon Robinson first preached at Byfield Parish on a stormy winter night.
He began his message that snowy evening by telling us that in his opinion it
was easier to direct people to heaven than to give directions to the Byfield
Parish Church. How do we tell a person the way to heaven? Robinson is
certainly right when he says that the Byfield Parish Church is hard to find.
By taking one wrong turn a stranger can wander around the parish for hours.
We routinely begin weddings five minutes late anticipating that some aunt or
uncle is out there somewhere, frantically trying to find us.
Not knowing the way to God is inexcusable. God, according to Paul, is plain
to see unless he is obscured by sin. "For the wrath of God is revealed from
heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness of men who by their wickedness
suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them,
because God has shown it to them."(Rm. 1:18,19) The reason people get lost
trying to find the Byfield Parish Church is because they cannot find the
way. The reason people are lost and cannot find God is that sin has blinded
their minds and God is the last person they want to meet. According to the
Bible, the evidence that someone is a sinner is his or her not knowing God.
