Devotional Guide
For the week of November 30, 2003
AMERICA COMES OF AGE; DECEMBER 7, 1941
Why believe the mystery
To Read: Matthew 4-6
To Know:
"Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of our religion: He was manifested
in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the
nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory." (1 Tim. 3:16)
The Pacific Ocean utterly dwarfs the Atlantic. It is easy to hide in such a
vast expanse. Hide is exactly what the Japanese Task Force steaming for
Pearl Harbor had done by December 3, 1941. The United States Navy lost track
of a massive array of Japanese warships that included six aircraft carriers.
On this Wednesday in 1941 the Task Force was refueled in secret. The crisis
in America's war room caused by losing contact with the Japanese became
grave when the FBI phone tap on a cook in the Japanese Consulate revealed
the decision to burn the codes used to secure messages to the Ambassador.
Earlier, Japan increased the frequency with which they changed the code and
now they prepared to destroy the code itself. The burning of the code and
the secret naval operation underway somewhere between the island of Japan
and the American west coast combined to shake the American High Command.
The word "mystery" in the New Testament is properly translated "secret."
Paul calls the Christian faith a mystery. The good news of the gospel is the
Lord's secret plan to save the world. In his mercy, God has made his plan an
open secret. If a man or a woman does not know the truth as it is in Jesus,
the reason lies in the fact that he or she refuses to believe the truth.
Scripture says that ignorance of the existence of God and of his plan to
save sinners through the death of his Son is hidden from the sight of the
natural man by sin.
To Do:
My friend was raised in a church that taught him to believe that the priest
alone could know the truth in scripture and thus forbade his reading of the
Bible himself. The Bible is a book for the people. Teachers are an aid to
understanding the scriptures, but no substitute for personal Bible reading.
The mystery of God is for us to believe because it is really no mystery at
all.

Hey Mr. Bear #163...I got a question for you. Why did God sent two of
your relatives, She-Bears I think it was, to kill 42 kids that made fun
of a bald guy?

The she-bears see Gummi Bears as kinfolk, it's OBVIOUSLY revenge for what the
kidz did to the Gummi clan
