Curtains For Josh Hancock -- St. Louis Cardinals Relief Pitcher |
Don't assume that Josh Hancock was drunk when he died early this
morning.
Just because a professional baseball player is alone in his Ford
Explorer at 12:35 a.m. doesn't mean he is drunk, tired or depressed.
Mr. Hancock was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident in the
St. Louis area. He was the relief pitcher for the St. Louis
Cardinals.
Josh Hancock was responsible solely for the behavior of Josh Hancock.
He was not responsible for the behavior of Dennis Martinez or any
other baseball player who likes to get high.

Most likely though.

I wouldn't say that. A tow truck was stopped in the left (fast) lane of the
interstate. You just don't expect vehicles to be stopped in the road.
From the SI article:
Police said the 29-year-old Hancock was alone in his 2007 Ford Explorer when
the SUV struck the rear of a flatbed tow truck at 12:35 a.m. The tow truck
was in the left lane with its lights flashing while assisting another car
that had crashed, Police Chief Joe Mokwa said.
Hancock died upon impact, Mokwa said. The driver of the tow truck, whose
name was not released by police, was in the truck at the time of the crash
but was not injured. Mokwa said the truck driver saw Hancock's SUV swerve
just before it hit the tow truck.
Mokwa said it appeared Hancock was driving at or just above the speed limit,
and there were no alcohol containers in his vehicle.
"We may never know what occurred," Mokwa said. "It appears that he just
merely didn't see the tow truck."
Some times horrible accidents happen to NON-impaired drivers too. My son and
husband are huge Cards fans and they were both distraught by the news today.
Almost exactly 5 years ago Darryl Kile (another Cards pitcher, ironically
due to play against the Cubs in Chicago too the same day) died unexpectedly
in his hotel room. Back then everyone was saying it HAD to be drugs,
alcohol, steroids, etc. Turns out Darryl had a heart blockage and "just
died"...there were no substances involved. The same situation might exist
here, so I think judgment should at least be reserved on this subject until
the autopsy is released.
Whatever happened it's still a tragedy that the team and fans will take a
long time to recover from.
