@ So . . . @ |
I am reading this text about affective piety in the Fourteenth century,
mainly women saints, and their incredible erotic experience of Christ
in the context of visions and self-imposed suffering to mimic His
suffering on the Cross. They lick his wounds, feel Him enter their
bodies like a lover, marry him with his foreskin as a wedding ring and
so forth (there was a foreskin cult - this is one part of Christ's
flesh that is said to be left on earth).
There is a song by Madonna called Like a Prayer that had a video that
got people upset - it is wonderful - piety turned to erotic pleasure
which, in turn, is transfigured into piety. An intersection with the
most worldly part of us with the divine igniting a spark of
transcendence.
DOES ANYONE know what I am talking about - does anyone come close to
seeing the face of God when they make love so intensely that the lines
are blurred between consent and ravishment, pain and pleasure, fucking
and lovemaking, etc etc.??
This stuff is something. These women were grand. I wonder if any
sisters today come close to their saintliness and experience such vivid
erotic in their chasity??

Visions? or hallucinations? What's the difference?

Are you sure you're not thinking about 'Like a Virgin'? That's not piety
portrayed in the video, it's self-pleasure.

Yes, but you won't find them in books nor much in academic circles.
They're contemplatives and most are either cloistered or in retreat.
Rosaries and practices like The Prayer of the Heart aren't for nothing.
You could see for yourself by doing a hundred thousand or so.

I suppose we think of one as a true deep religious experience and the
other as a product of sickness. BUT the lines are much more fluid I
think. And I always wonder whether some who think they are sick are
having genuine visions.

For an interesting exposition on this issue, read, "Are You Getting
Enlightened or Losing Your Mind," by Dennis Gersten. He reviews
experiences typical of mental illness, and those typical of religious
inspiration, and discusses their differences. Worth reading, if you
are interested in the subject.

"Are you Getting Enlightened or Losing your Mind" is a book by Dennis
Gersten. The copy I have is copyrighted 1997, and was published by
Harmony Books (a division of Crown). It appears not to be available in
this form, but Amazon has a book of the same name by the same author,
with a different subtitle
Are You Getting Enlightened or Losing Your Mind/ : How to Master
Everyday and Extraordinary Spirtual Experiences
which you can find here:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0609802003/qid=1120509952/sr=1-15/ref=sr_1_15/002-0881851-9116043?v=glance&s=books
I assume this is a reprint.

Why do you think they are different? What do you think happens when a
normal person has a deep religious experience? how about when a
schizophrenic person has a deep religious experience? What about a person
with epilepsy? What about a person who practices to see visions?
No no, it is like a prayer. People got upset for it shows lovemaking

Yes - in the technical theological sense - "perfect joy" - desire

OK. That is easy then, all you do is practice. Are you Roman Catholic? Do
a million Hail Marys with all the dressing, then you'll see. Or find some
other prayer, like the Jesus Prayer, and do a million of them. That's what
the little rosary counters are for, I have no idea what Catholics call
them.
You are right. Saint Clare Nuns in Assise. In retreat, quiet and
focused on prayer.
I'm quite sure that the schizophrenic members of the order are having
wondrous beatific visions as their practice progresses. Or observation,
whatever it is they do.
He he - I am too flighty to ever do the things I most admire. Do you
ever say Rosary? I have one for Maria and an old one from her great
grandmother.
I use them everyday.
I find Mary much closer - more concrete than Him as Father.
Then do a million Hail Marys. Start out, do 108 or 150 a day, one big
rosary whichever size it is. In no time, that seems like nothing. So it
goes from there. When you do it, see Mary in your heart. Visualise her in
the center of your chest, radiating grace out from there. She comes from
heaven down through the top of your head to your heart as the prayer
begins. She radiates grace and blessings. She herself is in prayer now for
you as intercession. She stays in your heart to be there with you in your
moment of death. She looks just like in an icon. Each bead on the rosary,
each prayer, she comes down from heaven to your heart and sets up
permanent residence to radiate grace and blessings. After a million times,
something sinks in, eh?

that sounds good to me... I like the idea of
that...transcendance,being worldly,being spiritual,breaking rules...I
like the idea of those things...I remember in High school, people would
always have sex in the the most unusual places, the gym,the library, the

shocking and daring...I was always jealous of kids who would do kind of
crazy,outrageous things,because I never did...I would have daydreams

since the original post is a day or 2 old, you probably won't see this and
what I have to say doesn't really matter anyways, but from my point of view,
this sounds extremely odd. Of course I'm naive in many respects and not
very educated in historical, religious matters as you are. Would be
interesting for my brother who has his doctorate degress in history and
american studies with strong emphasis on religion due to our upbringing,
what he would have to say about all of this. But this all seems very, very
odd to me, almost sacreligious......from my point of view and very tainted.

Hi,
I wasn't really clear because I was so excited about the old medieval
materials I was reading on the saints. It wasn't that they mixed
sexuality and devotion exactly in the way moderns would understand it.
It was more that their love of Christ was all encompassing - and thus
sensual as well as all else. They married him in a real profound way
taking vows of chasity. What happened, it seems, is their "sexuality"
was elevated to something refined and yet erotic that depended for its
beauty on love of God.
Of course, this is all very Catholic and for some Protestants very
wrong. Are you Protestant by any chance? just curious. Also does not
fit with modern Catholic understandings of proper devotion. But think
of Bible and portions of songs - very erotic yet when read as allegory
very properly pious and theologically complex.
Thanks for comment. I see your point.

in the context of visions and self-imposed suffering to mimic His
suffering on the Cross.
I wonder if any
sisters today come close to their saintliness and experience such vivid
erotic in their chasity??

since the original post is a day or 2 old, you probably won't see this and
what I have to say doesn't really matter anyways, but from my point of
view, this sounds extremely odd. Of course I'm naive in many respects and
not very educated in historical, religious matters as you are. Would be
interesting for my brother who has his doctorate degress in history and
american studies with strong emphasis on religion due to our upbringing,
what he would have to say about all of this. But this all seems very,
very odd to me, almost sacreligious......from my point of view and very
tainted. For me, and I'm only speaking for me, religion and sexuality
aren't a good mix.
