I hope some of you respond (Jean?????) because I am going loony. So
you might remember that before my surgery I got it into my head that
Maria's world, nay, her universe would implode unless before surgery we
got a couch. We didn't have one having moved so much. But I had to get
it online - spend too much (on credit) and get a burnt umber couch.
Now I am poooooor on graduate fellowship and I have it my head lately
that the world - mine or Maria's will not be okay unless we have our
chair fixed (which I did), get a table for it, a leather foot rest and
a lamp. Not any lamp mind you. This lamp (look)
http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?cmCat=search&itemId=prod27560129
Why????? I don't have a clue. I am worried about leaving Maria anything
when I die. I get weaker, my health gets worse, I have a harder time
keeping up with work and so I focus in on this damn lamp. I am nuts.
Once when I was a bar waitress and very broke I borrowed 500. from my
tax man to buy two tickets to opening night at the San Francisco opera
with Pavoritti (spelling?) and my mama, now dead, made me a red satin
ball gown with black twisted lact, long gloves (it was strapless and a
full ball skirt) and a beautful black satin cape which I still have. I
went with my then fellow . . . a petty mafia Latin type who I loved
fiercly for ten years and whose children (10) I raised. I don't regret
that night for it was something - surreal and fantastic though thank
god I left Jake eventually.
Will I regret getting this lamp to leave Maria??? Will she "get it"
when all I have to leave her are these few things I purchase to make up
for her lost legacy of her grandmama and her mother's STUPID
bankrupting of the family by showering John?? Will she know all her
life that she was loved and cherished and fretted over and that she is
special in a real way (she is quirky as they come) . . . Why am I
focused on a lamp from needless markup? I think because another
operation is coming . . . .
Anyway - does anyone like the lamp??

Oh dear.
Well, you know these things are always a matter of personal taste, but it's
awfully...ornate. It's not the kind of lamp that would go with a lot of
different decorating styles; it's not made along clean classic lines. It's
done in the style of heavily carved Victorian furniture. That's a
specialized taste that not a lot of people these days want to live with,
since it's heavy and dark, and requires more maintenance and cleaning
because of the carving.
If it's the lamp that you really want for yourself, then get it on that
basis, but I wouldn't look at it as being an heirloom that Maria would
particularly appreciate or get a lot of good out of. Lamps don't make the
best heirlooms. They don't stand up to time or wear as well as other types
of furnishings. You'd be better off getting something else if you want it
to be a treasure for Maria. If you want nice things to pass on, a lamp is
probably something you could save money on, and invest the savings in
something more lasting, Even a nice antique box of some sort that would go
on the side table with the lamp would probably retain more value and look
better over time than that lamp will -- and you won't have to replace the
shade. :-)
Does Maria really want that lamp? Is it something she will treasure through
the years?

Hi Bunny,
I laughed in a good way when I read your reply - It is ornate, isn't
it?! I have very ornate old fashion taste. Naw, truth is Maria would
much rather have a nice antique box - actually she loves old boxes. And
they are much less expensive than this lamp!
It is very strange - I feel lately a lot like I did when I was with
child, and I want to feather and nest. I wonder if it is about getting
older and the same instincts kick in when you start to face mortality?
I want the towels fresh, and flowers on the table, and only nice china
used - like a story-book nest.
But I know I am mad for I also wish we were living in the middle of a
musical where jugglers appeared and we all burst into song and did cart
wheels.
Thanks for input Bunny - A box it may be. Founn an old brass trinket
on little feet that Maria loves and MUCH more reasonable! Thing is, I
have to pay attention to work and I am day dreaming instead.
Hope you are well!!
Best

How about if I give you my grandfathers deer head, you can wire it, and
stick a lightbulb in its mouth. Hows that for an heirloom? I think that
store would charge at least 1,000.00 for a lamp like that. Thats a lot
of food money.

Why????? I don't have a clue.

It is probably spillover from your research. Lamps in the Middle Ages
held a special symbolic significance, indicating the transcendance of
humanity through the agency of the Holy Spirit.
The pedestal of the lamp represented the foundational aspects of the
human condition, i.e. humans as clay, arising from the earth, and
returning to it: "Remember, man, thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt
return."
The column of the lamp, rising from the pedestal, represented man's
yearning for God. Through the agency of the Holy Spirit, man rises
from clay and passes into the realm of God.
The light source (oil, back then) represented God Himself. Yet the
column was always separated from the light by the oil container, which
itself represented the ineffable gulf separating Man from God. The
radiance that bridged the gulf, descending from source to ennobled
clay, was the effulgence of the Holy Spirit.
Theologians generally agree to this point. Less clear, and the subject
of rancorous debate, is the symbolism of the lamp shade. Some say that
it represents the shroud of ignorance overhanging humanity. Others
claim that its origins are syncretic, a holdover from dark and angry
pagan rituals, later transformed into a symbol of God's beneficent
shielding. Members of the latter school draw parallels to the means by
which simple, unleavened bread becomes the body and blood of Christ,
through Transubstantiation.
Then again, maybe you just have a thing for lamps.

Have these theologians nothing better to do - like washing the dishes or
trimming their wicks? ;))
The lampshade is obviously to stop the light from dazzling the eye. The
possible theological associations with that are pretty obvious, IMO, but
not terribly significant <WEG>

Then again, maybe you just have a thing for lamps.

Ah, now you're talking; I have a definite thing for lamps, of all kinds;
odd really, given my preference for not too much light.

I watch a lot of HGTV...and get a lot of ideas from Design on a
Dime....As soon as I my boyfriend and I get a house together, I am
going to be using alot of the ideas that I get from there in my own
home..... When I lived with my ex.....I had bought a wrought iron
candle holder, it held about 12 candles..but instead of putting candles
on each tier, I put little clusters of river rocks on some... also from
Wal-Mart I bought little plaster columns, and some gold paint...then
just lightly put some gold paint on them to give them that aged
look....put small pot with ivy on top and let it cascade over the top
and it was beautiful above my cabinets in my kitchen....man I miss
doing that...can't wait to get a place of my own again, meaning no
renting!

I am hoping....but will probably get a different place to rent before
the whole house thing.....the place I'm in now....well it sort of
depresses me really....though I'm slowly trying to get things situated
in here...I've only been here since the middle of Oct...and I hate
it....I like my other apartment much better...it was newer..this place
hasn't been remodeled since it was built like in the '50s or '60s...but
oh well..it was the cheapest thing i could find on such short notice..
