How are things moving with your strike? Can you handle cost of living
while not teaching?
I was curious - are you interested in law, history, or religion too?
You had said we had similar interests.
My daughter is 13, how old is your child?

at least the two sides are talking again now, but this is only as of the
last two days, and we're now in the third week of the strike. rumor is that
we'll be back at work next week, either by negotiated settlement or govt.
legislation. if they let it go on past this week, it's going to be pretty
bleak.
i'm living in suspended animation as far as spending money goes, but with
austerity measures in place the pinch hasn't been too bad so far.
being on strike sucks as a lifestyle. not just the loss of income, but the
way it feels like a hole in space/time. the days are all exactly the same,
nothing going on except the eternal picket line in that blasted freezing
wind, punctuated by the occasional rally to "keep our spirits up". tomorrow
it's my turn to drive over to pick up the placards and "strike munchies"
(water, fruit & cookies) at the union hall. about 80 people will be
depending on me to get them to the line on time!
yesterday a colleague picketing at another campus was critically injured in
an apparent confrontation with a student driving a car through the line.
the guy somehow ended up on the hood of the moving car and fell to the
pavement, hitting the back of his head. it was the third such incident
since the strike began, but much more serious than the other two.

I was curious - are you interested in law, history, or religion too?

i said that because of your work in latin and then the comment about
researching morality plays the other day. i have an undergraduate degree in
philosophy and english and a master's degree in english. i took latin
through high school and medieval latin and ancient greek for my first two
years at university. i really liked them both, although at this stage i've
forgotten much.

My daughter is 13, how old is your child?

children. my son is 26 and my daughter is 24.

Best

thanks, you too :-)

Good. I thought it might be tough.

I crossed a picket line once in law school because I did not support
the strike (it was a very complex hot debate issue about quotas and non
discrimination) and it was tense and a bit violent. I tend to HATE the
idea of crossing a strike line being raised with very very old fashion
views of unions and the workers on Fisherman's Warf in S.F.

Cool! I am learning Latin. Very hard for me. I have to pass a language
exam for PhD. My undergraduate is philosophy too. Did you read
morality plays? They are neat. I like the Mystery Corpus Christi stuff
too. I am trying to glean attitudes about penitential suffering and the
role the body plays (or does not not play).

That is great. Contrarian here does ancient studies stuff and knows
Latin too. Do you know him? Very wonderful ASDer.

I can't imagine Maria getting this old :) Part of me wants her to stay
13 forever. You sound close to your daughter from other posts I have
read. That is nice. I really believe that when a girl has a messed up
relation with her dad, it impacts in a serious and bad way all men love
relations thereafter.

Oh dear. Sorry.

word tonight is that talks have broken down again. educated guess:
legislation friday, back to work on monday or tuesday.

Good. I thought it might be tough.

it's not so much tough as really boring. i think it was orwell who made
that comment about poverty. the main thing about it is that it's really,
really boring.

being on strike sucks as a lifestyle. not just the loss of income, but
the way it feels like a hole in space/time. the days are all exactly the
same, nothing going on except the eternal picket line in that blasted

He he - hope it went well

it went fine, like clockwork. so now i get to do it again tomorrow :-)
but actually it was fun, i don't mind. i spent some time at the union
office, talking to the people there. they share the building with united
steelworkers, which is a union i used to pay dues to back when i was a
student working factory jobs in the summers.

yesterday a colleague picketing at another campus was critically injured
in an apparent confrontation with a student driving a car through the
line. the guy somehow ended up on the hood of the moving car and fell to
the pavement, hitting the back of his head. it was the third such

i feel strongly about crossing a line too. i don't feel as strongly about
the line i'm on now being crossed though. i feel badly for the students.
this isn't their fault and they've been caught square in the middle. i think
most of us feel that way. the students who come to talk to us on the picket
line have all been friendly and supportive. we let them cross all they want,
we just give them flyers and a "hi there." so i have a hard time imagining
that incident with the car as a confrontation. i think it was more an
unfortunate accident. that could be naive, i don't know. anyway, it appears
no charges will be laid. opinion on that is mixed.

I was curious - are you interested in law, history, or religion too?
You had said we had similar interests.

morality plays? They are neat.

yeah. i've seen a couple performed too. there was a society at school which
used to put them on, and i remember an old prof i had, formerly a priest,
who would wax quite passionate while lecturing about them. "now picture god
standing up here through the whole thing," he'd say to the class and put a
chair on top of his desk, climb up on the desk and contemplate the notion of
climbing up on the chair, and say "oh dear... better not."

I like the Mystery Corpus Christi stuff
too. I am trying to glean attitudes about penitential suffering and the

well, i read him of course. i don't think we've ever exchanged views.

children. my son is 26 and my daughter is 24.

yeah, it's a strange feeling sometimes. vertigo. time passing is like
climbing a ladder where you get so high, you're scared to look down at the
hugeness of what's down there.

You sound close to your daughter from other posts I have
read. That is nice.

i'm really close to both of them, but he's pretty much on cruise-control
these days, and she's in a big crunch with a film project that teeters on
the brink of collapse, as does she, from exhaustion. so she's been more on
my mind. the next few weeks are critical for her.

I really believe that when a girl has a messed up
relation with her dad, it impacts in a serious and bad way all men love
relations thereafter.

well, i don't know. this kid is too busy for men love relations, as far as i
know. a more "driven" person i've rarely met. oh yeah, sometime last year
she did mention meeting this guy and getting all these tender feelings she
just wasn't expecting, ya know? so a few weeks later i asked her how things
were going with the guy, and she said, "well, i feel kinda bad about it, but
i just didn't have the time." so i don't know what that says about her
relationship with me, if anything.
but i agree, our childhood relationship with the opposite-sex parent
probably plays a big role in our opposite-sex relationship preferences,
attitudes and skills as grownups.
