@ Important - Maria - Spoiler (Cutting) @ |
I just discoverd last night with Maria's father that Maria is cutting.
We found blood soaked tissue and a stash of blades in three different
places, a note she had written to someone about cutting but not sent
and a book called "cut" about a teenage girl in trouble. I won't go in
to how we discovered all this.
She was gone at a sleep over and is not home yet, we talked to a
counsler who said to let her know we know and take the blades. We are
going to start her in therapy next week.
I am devastated - I don't know how to handle this - how to help her. I
don't know what is troubling her so much. Maria keeps intense feelings
locked down, repressed, and I don't have the key to unlock them to give
her relief.
I am going to suggest to her that she posts here and if she does I am
going to promise her to not read ASD and let her have a place. I KNOW
this place is usually always adults, but there are many many people
here I know from the years who I trust to perhaps engage with her in a
helpful manner. So, if you all see a young teen show up (I don't know
name she'd use perhaps GCjunkie (Good Charlotte Junkie) please try to
talk with her.
I think this is all my fault . . .I was so so so sick with John and
after he left, for two years I was nearly comatose (sp?)
unable to speak, walk, shower, hear noises (radio, birds, conversation
anything) in a bed with no sheets and not luicid when I did mumble.
Marai needed me and I wasn't there and worse than that she was exposed
to an insane mother. Gawd! I don't know how to help her . . . if any
cutters read please tell me today what you reccommend for the mother to
do.

Rosena,
I'm not an expert, and I have no personal experience of "cutting" nor do I
know any "cutter", but here are a few observations and suggestions.
This is obviously a very serious situation, and I think Maria needs
immediate professional help.
From your previous posts, I believe that your problems and the problems with
your ex may have contributed to, if not caused, Maria's problems.
This is just my opinion as a layman. Please seek professional advice. Best
wishes,

Kids are old than you think.
18 to buy porn? I was lookin at nekkid ladies at every opportunity I could
ever since I took an interest in girls, so that's what 12-13?
21 to drink? I started pilfering booze from parents at 14, we'd get drunk
and go biking around. When stealing/begging older siblings became
inconvenient I turned to an encyclopedia and learned how alcohol was made
and setup my own micro brewery, and I'd have been turning out potato based
moonshine at 17 if my still hadn't been found literally days before I was
ready to fire it up.
By the time they're 13 (at least for my childhood and the boys I grew up
with) they're already into stuff that would likely shock parents.
This place is absolutely no replacement for proper care, but it's not
supposed to be.

I'd suggest not telling us who she is, you never know who might have an axe
to grind with you and take it out on her. You also never know who would
start talking ***** about you just to wind her up.
I've never understood cutting.
If she uses her own nick (that you don't know) as well you both could read
ASD and not know who each other are.

I think the idea behind cutting. It hurts less then everything
else. Its choosing one pain over another. jil

Hi,
The billion dollar question... what the hell is so wrong that maria
would do this.
you really can't protect your kids from the bad people. Sharks in
the water everywhere. You can only educate them . People who know
who they are are alot less vulnerable. Having a strong identity
protects people from predators. This news group is no substitute for
therapy with a professional. Its also no more likely to harm her then
a million other places on the web.
(((hugs))) you can get thru
this!! jill

There doesn't have to be something traumatic going on for someone to want
to hurt themself. Does there have to be something so wrong going on that
makes you crave a cigarette? Is smoking any better than superficial
wounds? People find effective ways of dealing with stress, depresion and
the like. Cutting is not good. It's not positive, but a person doesn't
have to be a maniac or a psycho to want to do it.

No, they're not psychotic but christ, something is wrong. To compare
smoking to cutting is a little ridiculous. Smoking will kill you in 50
years or so but like overeating, it's a lot easier to be not making a
conscious decision to hurt yourself when you're 13 years old by picking up a
cigarette or the supersized fries then it is picking up a razor blade and
slicing your flesh with it. I mean, come on. This is rhetoric that ignores
the absolute obvious.

of course not I didn't mean to imply that/ I do not think the
cigarette analogy flies though. A cigarette creates a pleasurable
sensation in the body. It's relaxing. Cutting hurts. It's not the
same thing at all.
Yeah, I stand by my original position that somewhere deep down there
is some trauma/ some rage/ some helplessness. that is huge.
People smoke to hang with smokers . People do not cut to hang with
cutters. Its just a whole different thing happening . this is just my
opinion of course. I could be totally wrong. good luck to you

i have to disagree with you, hun. cutting doesn't hurt when you are in that
much mental pain. it is a pleasureable sensation and almost gives you a
"high." yes, it hurts later, but at the time of cutting, it can be quite
euphoric.

it's hard to explain to folks who aren't cutters...i don't usually even try.
it doesn't seem to make any sense, that's for sure. but there it is...
fwiw rosena (if you are reading this), i doubt that maria is to the point
that she's cutting for relief. cutting is a bit of a "fad" in the schools
right now...almost like having a tatoo or an odd piercing. i don't think
teens cut for the same reasons that adults do. usually not unless they've
experienced sexual abuse. most teens cut just because it's cool. hopefully
this is the case with maria, and you can get it nipped in the bud right
away.
as a good friend reminded me recently....the focus needs to not be on the
cutting itself, but on the underlying problem. if a big deal is made of the
cutting, it's just going to get worse. why? because it gets attention.
and that is what 13 yr olds want more than anything.

cutting doesn't have to due to sexual abuse. usually, there's
trauma of some kind, but it can be any kind of physical or
emotional trauma. there's usually a very low self-esteem, for
whatever reason. i was never sexually abused. i was
emotionally abused. hated myself. started cutting at 14.

I don't have kids, but if I did I would certainly have them schooled in
internet paranoia. Just because they don't know about newsgroups, web
discussion forums abound (and a lot of them just rip off our posts here to
make it look like they have an active bulletin board).
This is just one tiny corner of the internet and it's ceratinly not the only
place you'll find the Bad People.

just bad bad advice.

| This is just one tiny corner of the internet and it's ceratinly not the

there's a very good british site for self-harmers. moderated,
and only by subscription. they do a very good job there, and
it's the safest site for teens i've seen.
i joined for a short while, but stopped si'ing, and dropped it.

okay yea that would be safer, and might help. but a teen who is cutting is
in a weakend state and open prey to all kinds of sickos on wide open usenet
..
a moderated site would be a much better choice.
