I got my free copy of Windows Vista Business yesterday for doing a PC
tablet study. It was the 32 bit DVD however so I have to pay $10 to get
a 64 bit DVD copy. It's a *fucking* DVD...they can't fit both binaries
of the OS into 8+GB!!!!?
At least it's free. I've never paid for any of their software, always
obtained through hook or crook. Lately I've even got legit
copies...hologrammed discs. If you have any connection to the IT world
it's pretty easy to get a free copy or two by going to company seminars
and time wasting events like that.
Now I'm waiting for the Office 2007 Pro that I'll get for pushing my
wife into doing the same PC tablet study.

I've only once paid for their software, my workplace has a site
license deal (I don't actually use M$ software myself). What I'm
doing is replacing a dead mobo in a 'puter for a neighbour.
If I have to reinstall a copy from work, I'm going to be really
*****.
This situation is *totally* attrocious. The Home XP Window(tm)
product gives a 36 or so digit #. This you enter to fill out something
just as long.
I've tried the automated 'phone version and the helpdesk cunts in
India
(and they are rude too), neither actually work. Tried around six times
and entered everything correctly.
I'm just so glad I don't use Window(tm)

I've got two legit copies of XP Pro. I think I picked one up at an
unveiling of their .NET development suite and the other, well I don't
know... They've been installed many, many times (although always
legally, in fact I'm only using 1 of the 2). When I reinstall now I
always have to call India but they've never bothered me. It's just a
long conversation of each of us rattling off long strings of numbers.
I've even been able to install XP from the legit discs and an OEM key
instead of using a restore disc, which I had been led to understand was
no longer allowed. Perhaps it's because the OEM keys I've use have all
been from prior to that policy change.
I do keep a list of the OEM keys from machines I work on just...because.
They're overwhelmingly MS Home however and I need to be a "Professional".
I'm heading off to pick up my free copy of Office 2k7 Pro, so as soon as
the Vista 64 bit media shows up it should be...uh, maybe, interesting. I
certainly won't be tossing my Ghost image to revert back - that's for
damn sure.
I just hate having to switch to Vista because I'm going to need some
solid experience with it for fixing the fucked up machines that
friends/associates are going to be inevtiably bringing me in a couple
months. Word of mouth PC repair for cash is one of my few monetary
endeavours.

I almost broke down and bought Vista today, but I bought a monster of a
power supply instead.

Going through the exact same thing on a friends machine right now.

It's not gunna huppen.
I've actually now got onto an Australian M$ folk
rather than the Indian helpdesk shite (that required
a trick)
AU$40 reaming is required, unless the neighbour
can produce a number from the original install CD.
I'm so glad I don't use their products. I am also
unlikely to have any further contact with them in
life. That's Shite.
