10 miles today! |
x-no-archive: yes
I'm dying, but I did it. I've been running for almost a month now.
The journey of a 1000 miles begins with a single step. Something like that.

I can't even *walk* 10 miles. You're making me look bad (of course, that's
not hard to do).

Well, I've been running on/off since I was in middle school, so it's
probably easier for me to jump start than someone who's never ran before
at all. I started May 24, I ran 19 miles that week, about 3-4
miles/day. The thing I read in a book I bought on how to train for a
marathon is that you want to get a good chunk of your weekly milage from
your weekly long run. So I did 15 miles in 4 days this past week, and
then 10 today. I'm going to back off a little this coming week, it also
talked about progress as a sawtooth curve rather than a steadily
increasing progression.
Do you like to run?

As a start, thats great, but if you really want to run a marathon,
those 3-4 mile workouts won't be enough preparation, not enough mileage,
and they won't give you a feeling for your marathon speed.
Try to increase the length of the bulk of the normal workouts to 6-8 miles.

Alone.

I want to run a marathon. Beyond that, I just want to keep running,
because I enjoy it when I stick with it. And I want to lose 30 lbs.
One step at a time. IF I keep going, and really get to these goals,
then I might like to consider adding either swimming, biking, or both.
I'm not very good at either of those, though.

I never ran unless I had to, and now I can only run sometimes and only for
very short distances and not too quick. It would be nice to just
zip-a-dee-do-dah again, beat the feet.

Same here. I've always been kind of a klutz. The only thing I ever had going
for me was reaction time and eyesight. and now I'm old and slow and can't
see worth a damn anymore. Oh well. and half-deaf too.

I don't know. I'm also trying hard to cut back on the drinking. I've
maintained this weight for 5 years without paying any attention to
anything. I gotta think if I put in serious milage, it can't hurt.

Like I was saying on the wiki, I think the key to exercise is to find
something you like. Heck, wombn is gardening right now. She's out of
shape, and it's getting her outside, moving around, picking up heavy
stuff, etc...Some people like to dance, some like to walk, whatever
floats your boat.

Does drinking make you gain weight? or is that separate?

My boots wore out. I'll have to get new ones sometime. I don't mind carrying
a rucksack and walking on trails. that's as close as I ever get to
exercise.

Yes, it's empty calories, void of nutrition. And if you drink a lot, in
addition to eating a lot, and not exercising, well, they don't call it a
beer gut for nothing. Consider each beer is what, 130 calories? That's
~5% of the amount of calories I need/day?

It also slows your metabolism down, making it harder to get rid of the other

depressants slow everything down...
not the chemical reactions in the gut of course, but the flow of nutrients
around the body.

Ah, beer. I vow it off six times a day. haha

Yeah, there are. There's some places they kind of promote on nothing but the
awe factor. Where I live is surrounded by parks on three sides, one is a
small mountain and another an urban wetland. Then beyond that is three
sides of mountains, some still with snowcaps, and the ocean. I live in a
rainforest micro-climate within a mountain range that touches the ocean. I
think I'm really fortunate to be able live here.

The least in the whole country. They're just little frail ones here and they
can't even get up real squadrons. The worst ones are in the East: Nunavut,
Northern Ontario and Northern Quebec and Labrador. Vampire skeeters in
hordes that can darken the sky. They each need 5 litres of blood per day
and it only takes two to pull you out of your sleeping bag.
That's probably the worst thing about Canada, the blood-sucking flying bugs.
