People are probably gonna give you grief about this, especially since it
sort of resembles a recurring post the Millipede Guy makes, but
seriously, not too bad. Comments:
1) Saying "relax" isn't very helpful. Either just leave it at music or
add something else specific, like "take a bath".
2) "Different" could include eating feces or gluing squirrels to
mailboxes; again, need to be a little more specific. And reward yourself
for what?
3) This is a good idea. It can be hard, but anybody who takes the task
seriously should be able to do it.
4) Yup.
5) Yup.
6). Yup. I'm especially bad about NOT doing this, and I can really
appreciate its value. I always feel better after I clean up this
apartment I keep like a dump.
7) Book, yes. NEW HEADLINES? Yikes. Too easy and distracting, especially
on Yahoo and online sites like that, and way too much ugly stuff going
on that depression could latch right on to. Nonono.
8) Both really good ideas.
9) Never really tried this, but it's always struck me as a good idea.
10) Might be too scary if your head's in a really bad place. I think
this task needs more structure to be safe and beneficial.

yes, It's a good idea to have know a little about what's going
on in the world, but it can be very depressing to read newspapers and
news magazines paticularly... it reminds you of how many countless,
complex, not easily resolvable problems there are... it's very easy to
feel helpless and hopeless after reading the news...

Did you see the Time Magazine article on "Acceptance and Commitment
Therapy"? It was interesting, apparently it's an approach that is
challenging the CBT model. I don't quite understand it, it seems a tad
esoteric. I think it's something along the lines of, if you focus your
thoughts on behavioral changes, you paradoxically reinforce the thing
you're trying to change. So if you think about being depressed, and try
to use tools to get your thinking away from depression, you are actually
reinforcing that your depressed by fighting against it. Kind of like,
"don't think about a pink elephant right now" and all you can do it
think about a pink elephant, in order to not think about it.
At least, this is my initial understanding. It was interesting. I just
think about all the techniques that I've tried, and the struggle I've
made to change myself, and all I've done the last 2 years is spin my
fucking wheels around and around.

i like this theory and i use it myself ,
i'm nuts , i have crazy ideas ,
sometimes i'm overly sad , but ,
what the heck , may as well go with it ,
this thinking keeps me out of the danger zone a lot

I don't know, that's why I asked if you had heard of it. All I know is
what I read in the article, and it was kind of esoteric. I guess what
piqued my interest was the criticism they had of CBT. I just know the
frustration I've felt putting all my goals up on the wiki and ending up
in nearly the same boat 2 years later. Well, not totally true, I ran 2
marathons. But the other stuff never changed.

From what I understand of it, CBT isn't a matter of obsessing over your
problems, it's a matter of figuring out the broken thinking at the root
of them and trying to untangle it to weaken its effects. But anyway, no,
I (obviously) haven't read or heard about this stuff.
But then, I've just learned I'm a Republican Nazi Jim Jones for not
regarding the word "normal" as something to wipe my ***** with, so I'm
obviously not the right person to consult about mental health issues.

perhaps because you are anti-everything?

it does kind of remind me of that stuart smalley snl skit where the dude
would look in the mirror and tell himself he was acceptable "because I'm
good enough, I'm smart enough and, doggone it, people like me!"

I kind of have an idea, maybe with the need to move on to other things,
but with new people in your life. I guess this is partly what I need
therapy for. I haven't been well for over a year now. There's other
things going on here too.

I kind of have an idea, maybe with the need to move on to other things,
but with new people in your life. I guess this is partly what I need
therapy for. I haven't been well for over a year now. There's other
things going on here too.

My local surgery had five doctors in the practice, one of whom was appointed
as the practice specialist in emotional problems. That one doctor went to
great lengths to try and empathise with his patients. He'd pat you on the
head, refer you to a CBT therapist, dish out the 'flavour of the month' meds
along with the twelve step plan to accelerated recovery. 1:Listen to music
etc etc.
Two years ago he was struck off the medical register for getting caught
going il flagrante delicto, by basically romping it up on the psych couch
with some PYT patient who was receiving more than just a booster. With no
job, a seriously miffed wife and a lifestyle to pay for, he said he now found
himself experiencing for the first time just a taster of what it was like to
be really depressed. As he sat supping a G&T, he lent forwards over my coffee
table and like someone dishing out some gossip on the QT, he said "It's all
bollocks isn't it. When you're really depressed you can't function can you?".
I just looked at him and shook my head to one side and whispered "No".
Still.....at least he was better than my existing doctor who offers the
advice "You've just got to put it behind you and move on" to girls who have
been sexually abused and raped (His words - I swear).
I'm not having a pop at you, it just that this stuff pisses me off.
