Object: 10-year-old arrested for using steak knife at lunch
http://www.wftv.com/news/14858405/detail.html
OCALA, FL--A 10-year old Ocala girl brought her lunch to school and a
small kitchen knife to cut it. She now faces a felony charge after being
arrested. The school and the sheriff's office disagree on the reason for
the arrest.
School officials say the 5th grader was brown-bagging it. She brought a
piece of steak for her lunch, but she also brought a steak knife. That's
when deputies were called.
It happened in the cafeteria at Sunrise Elementary School. The
10-year-old used the knife to cut the meat.
"She did not use it inappropriately. She did not threaten anyone with
it. She didn't pull it out and brandish it. Nothing of that nature,"
explained Marion County School Spokesman Kevin Christian.
But a couple of teachers took the utensil and called the sheriff. When
deputies arrived, they were unable to get the child's parents on the
phone, so they arrested her and took her to the county's juvenile
assessment center.
"And we didn't handcuff her or treat her like a criminal. But, we took
her to the assessment center to be assessed," said Capt. James Pogue,
Marion County Sheriff's Office.
School officials said it doesn't matter what the knife was being used
for. They said they had no choice.
"Anytime there's a weapon on campus, yes, we have to report it and we
aggressively report it because we don't want to take any chances,
regardless," Christian said.
But the sheriff's office said the extreme measures in what some may say
was a harmless incident had to do with school policy, not theirs.
"But once we're notified, we have to take some type of action," Pogue
explained.
The student now faces a felony charge for the possession of a weapon on
school property and the principal suspended her for ten days. The
parents of the girl could not be reached for comment.
The sheriff's office has turned the case over to the State Attorney's
Office.

Has anyone watched the episode of "are you smarter than a 5th grader?"
with Regis Philbin?
He was talking about growing up in Catholic school, and kneeling in
front of the teacher's desk for prayers, and that he used that time to
carve his initials into her desk with his pocket knife.
I laughed, but one of the 5th graders was mortified... "you had a
knife in school?"
I'm so glad I'm not a child now. There's so much unjustfied fear
everywhere, and no tolerance to look at individual circumstances...
BTW, I've carried a pocketknife since I was 10.

Well... there was a time when you could be reasonably sure that some
random moron wasn't going to kill you for no particular reason. I guess
those days are long gone.
I miss the old steel jungle gyms built over solid concrete like at my old

whole time I was in school. I guess kids just aren't as tough as they used
to be.

Exactly Ivan... Boys just don't fight with their fists anymore, they're
shooting each other, stabbing each other, or beating each other to death.
Not men, boys. Not just boys either but girls as well, fighting over some
boy and literally will kill each other.

Everything is a liability. If that girl hadn't gotten arrested someone
would sue, but because she was arrested someone will sue, the world is
fucked.

I had planned to say more about the public "school" system. but i got
interuppted while typing, so i just hit send.
let me get this out of the way, I DID have 2 relatively good years in
school. 6th grade elementary. 8th grade junior high.
the rest ranged from okay to absolute, tortuous *****.
it seems things have gotten worse for kids in school, since I left in
the mid 90s. schools have become, more and more, places to
indoctrinate kids with social thinking. anti-parent, anti-family, anti-
moral. thinking. often done subtly. maybe i am talking out of my
*****. maybe ive listened to too much Alex Jones (conspiracy guy on the
radio out of Austin, TX) but i don't think so. maybe U2B can help
with this post, I'll be she understands it better than me, being a
parent and everything. or maybe someone else? I think Nick
understands too. both U2B and Nick have good souls.
what AM i trying to say here? the school system is totally evil, in
a nutshell.
help help help help somebody explain this better than i can, i suck at
this.
this small rant not spell-checked

we do live in a crazy, self righteous, materialistic, superficial,
fast paced, violent, competative, hypocritical culture... lots of
complex problems with no easy solutions... I guess that's partly just
a part of the human condition, that everyone has problems of one kind
or another, to one degree or other... so often it's eays to look at
strangers or aquaintances and think that they don't have any problems,
they look so calm and happy and carefree, but often when you talk with
them, or hear other people talk about them, you realize that they do
have problems... sometimes they are just able to appear happy, even
when they are not, or sometimes you just don't know them well enough
to know all of their moods... how could you possibly know all of the
moods or various sides of a stranger or even a casual aquaintance? you
never know what's going on inside of a person unless you know them
well, sometimes not even then... but in terms of the problems in
America? surely, things can be better. not perfect by any means, but
better... "The sane society" was written in 1955, and a lot of the
problems that were applicable to this country back then, still apply
to the America of 2007. In a lot of ways, things have become even
worse...

"Anytime there's a weapon on campus, yes, we have to report it and we
aggressively report it because we don't want to take any chances,

But the sheriff's office said the extreme measures in what some may say

"But once we're notified, we have to take some type of action," Pogue

The student now faces a felony charge for the possession of a weapon on

OCALA, FL--A 10-year old Ocala girl brought her lunch to school
and
a
small kitchen knife to cut it. She now faces a felony charge
after
being
arrested. The school and the sheriff's office disagree on the
reason
for
the arrest.
School officials say the 5th grader was brown-bagging it. She
brought a
piece of steak for her lunch, but she also brought a steak
knife.
That's
when deputies were called.
It happened in the cafeteria at Sunrise Elementary School. The
10-year-old used the knife to cut the meat.
"She did not use it inappropriately. She did not threaten anyone
with
it. She didn't pull it out and brandish it. Nothing of that
nature,"
explained Marion County School Spokesman Kevin Christian.
But a couple of teachers took the utensil and called the
sheriff.
When
deputies arrived, they were unable to get the child's parents on
the
phone, so they arrested her and took her to the county's
juvenile
assessment center.
"And we didn't handcuff her or treat her like a criminal. But,
we
took
her to the assessment center to be assessed," said Capt. James
Pogue,
Marion County Sheriff's Office.
School officials said it doesn't matter what the knife was being
used
for. They said they had no choice.
"Anytime there's a weapon on campus, yes, we have to report it
and
we
aggressively report it because we don't want to take any
chances,
regardless," Christian said.
But the sheriff's office said the extreme measures in what some
may
say
was a harmless incident had to do with school policy, not
theirs.
"But once we're notified, we have to take some type of action,"
Pogue
explained.
The student now faces a felony charge for the possession of a
weapon on
school property and the principal suspended her for ten days.
The
parents of the girl could not be reached for comment.
The sheriff's office has turned the case over to the State
Attorney's
Office.- Hide quoted text -

So anyways I tell him you know if we can't do it one week out of every
four, I'll be feeling short-changed. So, he's considering it.
He's like, oh it'll be messy, and I'm like, so? And he didn't have an
answer for that. My sheets are already red. F'en Ralph Lauren, they
are. Picked em up at Sally Anne for $3 each.

Did you know that 'The Lady with the Camellias' (a book by Alexandre

white camellias, substituting red ones for one week in four, when she
was "not available".
I think it's just a matter of taste, and extra lubrication.
