It's actually a reference to comedian Yakov Smirnoff (sp?) who used to
bits like that, but yes in that episode of The Simpsons they're making a
reference to the same person.

Where is the figure of 100,000 published?
<http://www.iraqbodycount.net/> shows twenty-six to thirty thousand.

yes, a great many of the statistics have been greatly exaggerated by
politicians and/or the media. on both sides. on a great many subjects. it
just depends on "who" is trying to sell "what" that day.

The lowest figure I've seen is still tens of thousands of non-combatant
deaths. Imagine if the war was being in fought in Texas...

I don't know the most blood-stained piece of land on earth, but the
French and Germans lost over a million men each fighting for Verdun in
1916. The battlefield wasn't more than a few square miles across. The
Salient near Ypres in Belgium had three major battles during that war,
and was fought over for four years.
These days life has a much higher value, in the West, though not yet
high enough.

it's frowned upon by the brass because it might offend black troops.

Towel head has been used by racists here for decades. Maybe it goes back

Apparently quite a few.
The exchange rate that bothers me is how many Iraqi civilians are worth

Hmmm, I can't find the Lancet article, but it seems that the 100,000
figure includes all deaths where the figure on iraqbodycount indicates
those directly attributable to and reported as caused by the combat.
Infant mortality increases, for instance.
