Iraqis protest at US 'terrorism'

Shias accuse the US of heavy-handedness
Up to 10,000 Iraqi Shias have taken to the streets of a Baghdad suburb to
denounce the US for "terrorism".
The protest came during the funerals of two Shias allegedly killed by US
soldiers in Sadr City on Thursday.
The US Army says the deaths followed an ambush on an American patrol on
Thursday which two soldiers died.
Local people say the dead Iraqis were guarding a Shia cleric, and died in
an exchange of fire with American troops searching the area after the
ambush.

How about if you don't crosspost to a whole bunch of groups where this is
off topic.

New Tactic
U.S. Soldiers Lured Into Ambush by Iraqi Civilians, Says U.S. Official

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/business/World/iraq031010.html

B A G H D A D, Iraq, Oct. 10- U.S. soldiers were lured into a deadly ambush
during a routine patrol in a restive Baghdad neighborhood in what could be a
new attack tactic, said a U.S. military official today.

Two U.S. soldiers were killed and four others were wounded during the
ambush in the impoverished Sadr City district of Baghdad, U.S. military and
hospital officials said today. At least seven Iraqis were also injured in
the attack.

U.S. troops in three Humvees were on a routine patrol in Sadr City on
Thursday night when they were lured into the ambush, U.S. Army spokesman Lt.
Col. George Krivo told reporters in Baghdad.

"A group of people, civilians, met with U.S. forces and said, `Please
come in, we need to show you something important,"' said Krivo.

But when the troops left their vehicles and followed the Iraqis into
the densely populated slum, they came under fire from rocket-propelled
grenades, small arms and makeshift explosives, said Krivo.

Although an Army quick reaction force responded and helped extricate
the patrol, Krivo said the attack lasted for about two hours.

Krivo said the luring tactic was not something U.S. forces in Iraq had
experienced so far, but he said U.S. troops hoped to "learn and evolve from
it."

Residents Dispute Account

Residents of Sadr City, however, said the attack occurred when U.S.
forces closed in on the headquarters of radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Once called Saddam City, the sprawling, impoverished Shiite-dominated
slum on the edge of Baghdad is now named after the radical cleric who runs
several charities in the area.

Tensions have been high in Sadr City following Thursday's suicide car
bombing at a police station near Sadr's headquarters in which 10 people were
killed. Witnesses said U.S. troops were conducting house-to-house searches
following the attack.

Although the traditionally marginalized Shiites have been opposed to
Saddam Hussein and Shiite-dominated southern Iraq has been relatively calm,
there are growing indications that a number of Shiites are angry at what
they view as the coalition's failure to adequately protect their
communities.
