17 Jan 2006 - today's quote |
There is no arguing with the pretenders to a divine knowledge and to a
divine mission. They are possessed with the sin of pride, they have
yielded to the perennial temptation.

Oh, you betcha. The Christian fundamentalist movement grew out of a
series of a dozen pamphlets, published in the U.S. between 1900 and
1912, entitled "The Fundamentals".

Just a label of course. Obviously the people who launched the crusades
were a little fundamentalist also. So Christian fundamentalism has existed
as long as Christianity - though in the early days the fundamentalists
where usually the ones being killed.
In some ways it is disturbing to call modern Christian fundamentals
"fundamentalist" since not all their beliefs are fundamental at all. The
idea of a rapture, for example, dates to the late 19th century.

I don't know if doing what the Pope decreed counted as fundamentalist,
though the Inquisition gets close.
Btw, the fundamentalist wing of the Church of England are called
evangelicals. They aren't American style, but do demand a return to
Victorian values of misogyny and homophobia amongst other things.

everything should be questioned, I think. everything should be
questioned and challenged and debated... otherwise there is
dogmatism... In terms of pride, I guess that's something that everyone
has to worry about, because I think most people are subject to it, on
whatever side they are of religious issues, political issues, whatever
issues... It's very easy and tempting, I think, to think that we are
always right, we know the *truth*, and that those who disagree with us
are *wrong*... it's important to have some humility, to be willing to
LISTEN to other people, to their thoughts, opinions, and ideas, and not
just dismiss the other person...

This applies even to the idea that some people value the Pledge, the

yes, although that's a very, very hard thing for me to do... I
often try to work on that, paticularly seperating the person from their
views, but it is very tough... On an emotional level, paticularly, I'm
extremly anti all the things you mention, and more... I was also
thinking a lot recently about one of the reasons why I'm so anti
anything "conventional" and "old fashioned"... I think there are a lot
of reasons, but one reason is, I think, that I'm unhappy and
uncomfortable with all the conventional things about myself that there
are... for example, I'm not conventional in the sense that I fit in
with most other people, but I'm conventional in the sense that I don't
DO a lot of unusual, creative things, it's more my own ideas, fantasies
etc...

divine mission. They are possessed with the sin of pride, they have
yielded to the perennial temptation.
--Walter Lippmann, _The Public Philosophy_ (1955)
everything should be questioned, I think. everything should be
questioned and challenged and debated... otherwise there is
dogmatism... In terms of pride, I guess that's something that
everyone
has to worry about, because I think most people are subject to it,
on
whatever side they are of religious issues, political issues,
whatever
issues... It's very easy and tempting, I think, to think that we are
always right, we know the *truth*, and that those who disagree with
us
are *wrong*... it's important to have some humility, to be willing
to
LISTEN to other people, to their thoughts, opinions, and ideas, and
not
just dismiss the other person...
This applies even to the idea that some people value the Pledge, the
flag, mom, and apple pie? Are you willing to listen to them, and to
consider their thoughts, opinions, and ideas too?
yes, although that's a very, very hard thing for me to do... I
often try to work on that, paticularly seperating the person from
their
views, but it is very tough... On an emotional level, paticularly, I'm
extremly anti all the things you mention, and more... I was also
thinking a lot recently about one of the reasons why I'm so anti
anything "conventional" and "old fashioned"... I think there are a lot
of reasons, but one reason is, I think, that I'm unhappy and
uncomfortable with all the conventional things about myself that there
are...
I think that's a common response. I get mad at people who have
unrealistic social expectations, drives me crazy, and I think that's
in part because I've been so clueless and stupid in the past.
<Cough! Gasp! Choke!>

The opinions given above may be mine. They might also
just be what I feel like saying right now, okay?

That's really great; if I had the ability to have a signature here, I'd
be tempted to use that one.
