Air conditioners just have freon to cool them, a swamp cooler has a big
wheel/fan thing and needs a water hose hooked up. A swamp cooler pours
water over a spinning fan. The water cools the air blowing through it.
Swamp coolers only work in dry enviroments, but they work really good.

There isn't a whole lot of difference. Swamp coolers have more moving
parts, are more efficiant, and better for the enviroment, but they're
also bigger and more things can go wrong.

Usually they get a bad rep because the people who have them don't
understand how they work and how you have to open your windows up. I had
a friend growing up who had one that blew into the basement. You could
stand at the basement door and it was like a hurricane coming up the stairs.

that's what the only one i ever saw did ,
it was in a long hallway ,
between the living room and the bathroom ,
it was a big air vent , floor to ceiling and maybe 2 feet wide ,
and when you walked passed it , it blew you over to the far wall of the
hall ,
and you'd be stuck there like those centrifugal force carnival ride

I think major wind force is all part of quick evaporation off the
"sponge" belt that passes in front of the fan. Otherwise it would just
be spitting water droplets.

Evaporative coolers. Yeah, sorta palusible, however smelly
yuckky things needing water tipped in. Freon (R12) is not
likely to be something you will see a lot of these days. More
likely R22 for 'fridge or home A/C.
Surprisingly the old gas (LPG) powered 'fridge setup works
well (a hydrogen/amonia setup powered by a flame), not
sure how it would do for A/C.

My central air is still R12. It was retrofitted into an older house
though and the "ducts" are really just the space between rafters for a
lot of the house.

Keep the R12 if you can, R290 is the best bet though (I use it
in my pickup truck A/C). R134a simply doesn't work as a retrofit.
Mind you, charging a car A/C system and house system might
be a little different. Some car A/C systems, and I suspect house
might be a little unsafe changed with R290 (propane) in case
of accident.
Most car A/C systems don't really hold enough quantity
of R290 to be dangerous.
