20 years ago today (baseball stuff) |
This is the 20th anniversary of the famous "pine tar incident". Do you
remember what it was?

Yup. Billy Martin challenged George Brett's homerun cuz the pine tar was
out of spec for how high up the barrel it can go. Much ado about nothing,
imo.

well, I have lived in KC all my life, so it was a big deal here...
still is... as far as being much ado about nothing, my friend, you
must remember that the Royals and the Yankees were bitter rivals at
that point in history... the royals were a powerhouse in the american
league and had spent the previous 7 years battling the yankees in post
season almost every year....well... it started in 76 i believe.. and
they met in 77.. than in 79... in 80 they met and the royals went to
the series and lost to philly... they met a couple of more times in
the 80's before the royals finally won the world series in 85...
so at the time... it WAS a big deal... round these parts anyway.

You are right. Who could forget the image of Freddy Patek sitting alone in
the dugout (after, I believe, the Chris Chambliss homerun to shallow right
field), or Brett Saberhagen dominating the post season. It was a big deal.
And the last time I checked the sports page, the Royals were in first by 5
1/2 games, I think. Go Blue!

As it turned out, you are right. The Royals were given the home run back
and won the game upon appealing the decision.

Yeah, they were playing that a lot on ESPN yesterday.

Ha! George Brett was my favorite baseball player when I was younger.
