I do myself a greater injury in lying than I do him of whom I tell a lie.

That reminds me of a somewhat more guttural quote from the movie Thief:
"Lie to no one. Someone's close to you? You'll ruin it with a lie.
And if they're a stranger, then who the ***** are they that you
gotta lie to?"

i tell the truth because it is easier. i have a short attention span
and can't remember the lie. hell, i can barely remember the truth.

To tell a convincing and consistent lie is difficult. You have to
persuade yourself that the lie if true. Like my readership at Oxford in
Homeric keramics.

i have conducted an in-depth study into telling lies.
most people expect to be lied to and will not believe the first thing
you tell them. so when they ask a question you don't want to answer,
first tell them the truth because they won't believe you. then
prevaricate which they might believe. but if you really don't want them
to know, tell them the truth but with a knowing smile so they will KNOW
you're lying.
works every time.

In my personal experience this is the absolute, unequivocal truth. People
are so strange aren't they?

You can start of with the truth, follow with another truth, and then a
lie.
"And what do you do?"
"I don't do anything, I'm insane."
"Okay, I'm not really insane, it's the rejection slips, they are so
depressing."
"Look, I don't like to talk about it, but really I'm a divorce lawyer."
You'll have them asking for advice ' for a friend' within three seconds.
You then look at your watch and say you don't work for nothing, and your
minimum charge for a consultation is £500, because that's what you're
worth. Some suckers may even pay you up front. As you pocket the cheque,
you say "My advice is, don't do it, the lawyers always win." That's one
idiot who won't bother you again.
